Fraew, Gladys, and Judythesewer.... fantastic! blocks. they are all looking so perfect!
i just cannot get back to my blocks. since i bought this house, i've spent so much time renovating... right now i'm doing the main bathroom. in a couple of weeks, my brother is stopping by to help me put an extra bedroom in the basement. i think i'm going to NY for christmas, so want to quilt the two quilt tops UFOs for my two older grandkids. i really don't like this house so will be selling it in the spring and going back to my previous condo! the good news about that is that i'll probably make enough on this house to be able to afford a Bailey's 17 quilter i seriously need to find a small space to set up my DJ project, though... i really miss making those little blocks.

I've finally finished my grandson's quilt except for the binding and I can put that off for a few days. I've been making DJ blocks, too, but hadn't taken pictures til now. So here's Weeks 40, 41, and 42.

Thanks QuiltnNan. Sorry to hear that you don't like the house. I was excited for you to do the move...except for the stall in sewing. Best wishes as you work through it.

Katybob I am at a loss for words! You just keep going any going at 3 times the pace mind you! Awesome work. Keep it up.

Same here, QuiltnNan. Sorry both that you don't like the house and we miss seeing your DJ blocks. But we'll stay tuned, I'm sure you'll get back to them!

Arghhhh. I am so over this block. Inset seams, being super careful to have the points come out nice, doing this EPP (and I've lost my bifocles!!), and when all is said and done it is measuring a little too large and if I'm not careful I'll cut the points off when I add the sashing! And I had planned on spending the last 2 weeks working on 6 blocks not just this 1! Yes, I'm a little frustrated this morning. Trying to load this picture is different this morning, so not sure how it will show up once I post it. Maybe I'm just out of sorts as Hurricane Sandy bears down on us. It's still nice here, with only occassional breezes. But the reality is we lose power frequently where I live and we might be out for days (again).

I will pray all you East-coasters stay safe with homes intact!
Cindy - your points look awesome now - what I have done before to make sure the points that are less than 1/4" from edge stay when I add the next piece is one of two things - either take in the seam with the point ever so slightly right next to the existing seam [above I would stitch right next to the seam the lower left white square shares with the red star point above it] - this tweaks the square a bit giving you slightly less than 1/4" at the bottom edge but giving you a little more at the point. You can also simply adjust the width of the sashing you add and give it another row of stitching to secure the seam so it doesn't fray.

Finally sitting at my machine to attack DJ myself! Katybob - you are inspirationally awesome!!!!! more than one DJ and you are on the right week CHEERS!!!!

I've picked out fabrics for this weeks - G6, G9 H1 and last week's G7... photos to follow soon I hope [need to check back to make sure I posted the last ones I actually did...]

Happy peaceful end of weekend and some sewing!
Gus

OK – so I made two blocks today I want to share and took some pics along the way so that I can pass along a bit of a ‘tute’ for both G9 and H1. [OMG – two down for this week……really??? Don’t faint!]
For the ‘newbies’ who don’t know me… I really really do like paper piecing [“PP”] when there is no other way. It’s great when it involves some awkward angles or sizes that need to be precise, great in kaleidoscope or mariner’s compass type blocks or sections of quilt. But, if there is a way to easily make a block and avoid taking out 20-30 pieces of paper – hey – here I am, I will take that route!!
First – G9
When I look at this block I see “EZ” – 4 flying geese, 4 half-square triangle section corners all around a center square made out of a two-tone “X” filled in with triangles. My favorite method for making flying geese is called a ‘no waste method’ or “bikini method.” You can find thorough instructions here: http://www.patchpieces.com/files/flyinggeese.pdf . Basically you make 4 sections by cutting a large square for the “geese” the measurement of the width of the finished section + 1 ¼” and cutting 4 smaller squares for the background the measurement of the height of the finished section + 7/8”. Here the finished flying geese sections measure 2 ¼” x 1 1/8” – so cut the light section 3 ½” square and out of the print cut [4] squares measuring 2”. In fact, you need lots of 2” squares for this block. Cut two more 2” squares of print and background fabrics to make your corner sections – right sides together sew ¼” seams on either side of one diagonal. The very center square is a ½” square – cut it 1” – the light background rectangles measure slightly less than 1 1/8” x ½” … don’t sweat the small stuff!! I always measure UP to the next 1/8” and adjust to the right finished size simply by taking a more generous ¼” seam!
For the corner triangles in the center square [to square it completely] I cut two 1 3/8" squares out of print and cut them once diagonally. Assemble the center this way... triangle, long side of rectangle, triangle.... short side of rectangle, small center square, short side of rectangle.... triangle, long side of rectangle, triangle. What I do is sew the first two parts of each strip together first, press, then re-measure to identify where I should make the final seam so the measurement is accurate.

and the pictures....

ok that didnt work...

Im sorry - I've not had this problem but it is taking way too long to try to add pictures. I keep getting a fail message and have tried various ways. I have 6 pictures for each block and promise to try again in the morning when I can at least contact someone on the board by phone
I will post the alternate instructions for H1 when I can get the photos to load.
