Catching up. I measured and cut each piece, something I haven't done in a long time. Standard size pieces made it possible.

from left to right: TR-9, TR-5, TR-2, BR-2
Tris have never been my favorite. But after doing these four all at once, maybe I'm ok with them now. I need to remember to leave extra fabric on the outside edges, I so often come up just a little short when it's time to trim them to size.

TR-9 was the trickiest out of these four. I machine pieced most of the block but hand pieced the inset seams (at the right and left of the top two diamonds). They looked so nice!! I was so proud of myself and the extra time I took to do it. Then I went to trim the block and gosh darn if it wasn't too short. ARGH!! So I slapped on the two white side pieces. I'm not re-doing this block. But I hope this will help me to remember to cut all outside pieces a little big.

Tip for tris: when I was working on the four tris I went to thatquiltblogspot and noticed a comment she made on one of her tris. Work from the bottom up, adjusting at each level so that the tri remains straight and doesn't go wonky. You all have probably already mentioned that - forgive my bad memory! Anyway, since I feel like my tris always DO go wonky I followed her advice and it made a big difference.

Even the first two bottom pieces I joined weren't quite straight. So I used the ruler and penciled in a line so that it was perfectly straight (at least as straight as I can make it). You can see, right by the point of the pencil, the new line. It's only a hair different than the original pattern line. We're talking about 1/16-1/8 of an inch! But this is the line I used to measure as I trimmed as I joined each additional section, working from the bottom of the block up towards the tip.

Here, I'm carefully measuring from my new line as I trim the 1/4" after joining the next section.

I did feel like the block was lined up much nicer after taking the time to do this.

QuiltnNan, I'm so glad to see your blocks again! I'd forgotten you're making three at once and it doesn't seem that it's been almost a year since we've seen your blocks. And I'm so happy that Jacquie and SheriR are joining in again. I've been a little lonely ! I think Gladys has been busy with other projects, but I know we'll see her beautiful blocks again soon. Cindy, great job as always! I've added borders to more than one triangle and I remember reading that Jane obviously did the same with some of her blocks.

D-5 Cathedral Window

Back to work tomorrow, sigh . . . so this might be that last of my catching up. Maybe I can get another block or two done if I put my mind to it.

I really enjoy looking at all of your blocks/tris. They are all so wonderful! Don't feel bad about how behind you are, I'm even further. I tried to do the first couple of weeks, but gave up. I've managed to re-teach myself hand quilting and hand applique (not quite as good as before yet). But I have yet to become friends with my machine again. My goal is to try again this week. Wish me luck! Meanwhile, I continue to look at all of your wonderful blocks. And dream.

I was working on B8. After I'd sewn the first center together, I got to thinking... why am I sewing 4 sections together? It doesn't eliminate the Yseams for the outer part. So I just put the center templates together and made a solid template for the star. I love that so much better. [I haven't checked Jane's quilt to see how hers was constructed, though] I think the Yseams came out better without the extra seams.
The top of the first pic is the pieced center and the bottom part is the solid

Here are my next two blocks:
I6 and BR6.

First a note about I-6 [wk of Jan 27]- I found it to be rather basic applique. Just like B8 Nancy, the center section is actually made of four individual pieces sewn together before they are appliqued. Block number F-9 uses the same principle. The star centers of B8 and I6 are appliqued on top of the background. You join the four sections from the center up to 1/4" from the inner points where it joins the background. Purpose for this?? you ensure integrity of the inner points - less chance of fray and the points will actually turn out more 'pointy.' In F-9, it is the outer sections of background that is divided into four sections. At first you wonder - why?? You can achieve much crisper points by doing so with less chance of fray. There are no real Y-seams in these pieces because they are not 'inset seams'... does this make sense??

For those who have not yet tackled BR 6 [wk of Dec 2]- I changed it a bit. Notice that Jane's large triangle goes to a point at the top. Both thatquilt and the book pattern have cut it off.

the points - outer and inner - of the side triangles are 1 3/8" apart:
1. draw the triangle border on paper-piecing pattern - two straight lines 1/2" wide [remember to add seam allowance when you do the final cut on your fabric!]
2. starting at the point where your bottom edge is, make a mark every 1 3/8" to indicate the bottoms of the triangles at the base line.
3. at the top line, mark exactly midway [begin first mark at 11/16" = halfway between 5/8 and 3/4; then continue by measuring 1 3/8" from that mark]

I simply continued the big triangle upward to a point and the fourth side triangles ended at a perfect spot for me to sew a tiny rectangle of blue across the middle and add to that the template I created for the very top. This is easier to see in the picture. That little arrowhead center I made by sewing a 3/4" strip of blue on either side of a 5/8" strip of background. The center 'white line' is less than 1/8" wide. I joined this piece very carefully by hand a mere 3/16" above the top blue rectangle [this will become a triangle when I applique the arrow top piece template of background fabric over the unit.] Jane's arrowhead is much more delicate than the sketch.
Hope this all makes sense! [I haven't trimmed it yet because I've misplaced my Jane triangle ruler ]
