Hi

I have now come to the end of my sew on these blocks till I locate more back ground fabric, I am going to give it 1 more month to locate it and then I will have to put together plan B and redesign how to set out the block and put some on the back wher I will be abale to change the back ground fabric. I have sent out email with a photo to most of the patchwork shops in a 100km (62miles) radius of where I live in Sydney, no luck. I might have to go on a road trip while I have some leave in October.

Here is my North Dakota block

Hi Lynn - what is the name - or any make - identification ? of the fabric you need - perhaps we could try and see if we can locate it in different countries ! Just a thought !

Here is my North Dakota for this week. Lyn I am in the same boat as you, start cutting some blocks ready for sewing and boy did my background fabric start looking sad. I have 4 more to cut to make 42 blocks in total and I have about 10 inches left, so I am going to be calling this one finished at 42 blocks.

Definitely not doing an Ocean Wave sashing on this quilt, my sashing is a simple 2 inch black with gold star points and a cornerstone in the connecting sash to create a small star. I really wanted white sashing with black and red tiny stars floating across the quilt but not enough background fabric so went with the black. Sometimes we have to compromise

Love that block, Mirab. I like your plans for the small stars in your sashing. I still have no idea what I'm going to do with all my blocks. I sure do like making these blocks--they're addicting.

Ladies your blocks are wonderful. I am curious Toverly and Mirabelle, how much background fabric did you start with? What size are your blocks? The reason I am asking is I am right now considering buying some background for my start on these and its a light batik background. These are not only hard to find to begin with but will be impossible later! I was going to get 2 yards. I plan on making my blocks between 10 1/2 and 12 1/2.

Toverly, is your background fabric all the same or are you mixing batik prints? I LOVE it

qltgrose, 2 yards won't be enough for 12" blocks. I think I purchased 7 or 8 yards, maybe even more.

qltgrose, I mixed my light background batiks also so, I don't know how much I used in the total quilt. Maybe someone who used the same fabric knows how much they have used total. In a typical king size, I buy 9 yards for the back, this has lots more seams. All I know is I kept adding fabrics to it so I was certain I wouldn't run out. Remember with paper piecing, you have much more waste that with a traditional block. You will be cutting rectangles and then sewing triangles for the stars which leaves waste.

Toverly, with odd shapes I always print one extra and use that as templates. That way you don't have so much waste.
