While at the LQS Mouse Creek Quilts I checked out the scrap basket and garnered about 3 total yds of fabric (large pieces) and discovered a piece of sailboat fabric at the bottom...that's after I purchased a 1/4 yd of anchor fabric...drats!!! You can now see the sailboats in the block!!!

Ok, then there is Everyone's Favorite:Look close in the corner's and we have "green" horses: wild, free, and unbroken to saddle, or cart.

Honchey 05-01-2012 06:13 PM

Ahoy Matey!!! Oh Nina, I just love your originality and use of fabric.....I just noticed I'm sailing in the opposite direction!!!

QuiltE 05-01-2012 06:13 PM

Honchey ... great fabrics all round! Good for you for drawing on your own memories in choosing your fabrics. Doing so, gives us all, so much more meaning and attachment to what we are doing.

My blocks are done ... I'm too tired to mess around with the camera tonight, so will do so tomorrow.
Since I made mine, this song has been going thru my mind ....
I'm sure if I'd thought of it first, it would have influenced my fabric choices?

So now, I'm wondering if
Honchey was thinking much the same as I?

... OMG ... now that's amazing your sail fabrics! Absolutely unvbelievable!!! It really does make it look 3-D. And better still with your Golden Gate bridge and the sea horses!

oksewglad 05-01-2012 07:29 PM

You guys never cease to amaze me. I have boat done, but like QE too tired, Cn't even type right!

Wow you both nailed your sailboat blocks. Honchey I love the sailboat fabric it is so cute and QNS you sails look like are flapping in the breeze.
Here are my blocks for this week, sadly I did not make a sailboat block, just couldn't see one in roses:rolleyes:

Mirabelle...oh but your blocks are beautiful.

Honchey...such cute fabric. Your efforts pay off.

QNSue...who would have guessed this MO cowgirl sailed boats in the Bay? You are just soooo creative!

Here are mine for the week.

Honchey.....the little ships fabric is so cute
QNS.....Love the bridge and your themed block
Mirabelle....more pretty roses
gardnergal......more pretties.....

wendiq 05-02-2012 06:14 AM

QNS....How did you get the sails to wave? So sharp!

Loving what you all have done with this week's blocks. You are all so creative. Little boats, Golden Gate Bridge and some really bright sails.
I , on the other hand am perfect example of what happens when you sew late at night and your brain is mush. I thought I had enough apple fabric, but when I was half way through realized I wasn't even close. So I put polka dots where apples should be. I am trying to choose fabric to keep the spirit of the story so I really wanted apples this time.

QuiltingNinaSue 05-02-2012 06:43 AM

Good job, JanieW; I like the apples and the polka dot in that block. I love Wednesdays and the block show. The "wave" in my boat sails is in the novelty print I used in a previous quilt...from the 12 month quilt block book.

wendiq 05-02-2012 07:05 AM

JanieW....those apples make me hungry.....the clouds are so peaceful....Looks like a nice day on the water...:)

Termi 05-02-2012 07:06 AM

Honchey, so glad you found the sailboat fabric, your block is so cute, bright and colorful. Great job!

QNS, you are so creative! Those sails are really waving and the bridge looks fabulous! Great job on both!

mirabelle, gorgeous blocks! Nice job!

gardnergal970, great job on both, I really like the colors, especially the orange.

wendiq, how cute your sailboat is. Love the colors on both. Great job!

Termi 05-02-2012 07:12 AM

JanieW, don't know how I missed you. The colors in EF go so well together. The polka dots add to it. I think it's good you ran out of apple fabric. Great idea using the cloud fabric for your boat, very, very pretty!

QuiltE 05-02-2012 07:18 AM

Oh myyyyyyyyy ....... what you ladies have produced!

QNSue ... seems I missed your EvFav posting ... as always innovative you are, and the priceless Don't Fence Me In. I think that is all about you!

MiraB ... yours are always so precious and calming!

GGal ... incredible FC on those twinkling stars. Your sails too look like they are billowing in the wind!

WendiQ ... a perfect blend of blues for the sailboat, and complete with starry sails! Great contrasts and FC for EvFav!

JanieW ... your mushy brain thinks well and I think you have a better block by needing to add the polka dots as it gave more variety and let those apples show themselves more! ITA that your cloud fabric was a perfect choice ... you'll see a different cloud fabric in mine! :)

I couldn't wait to photo/post for later today ... just had to do it now!!! (one of the good/bad parts of a home office!)
Another one here, who didn't flip the sails! :) A slight design change ... I thought the boat needed to be "in" the water! And Patches will be delighted to see that it's not rain coming from those clouds! :)

janRN 05-02-2012 08:06 AM

Will have to post pics later; coffee shop wifi if "iffy" today. What a great quilt block show to see today!

Anne-great piecing as always and I love your bright colors and story.
QNS-you always "wow" me with your choices. Love the sails waving and the wild horses in EF.
Mirabelle-beautiful; calm but colorful. Love the green with the roses.
Ggal-great color choices. I especially like the fabric in en EF.
Wendiq-love those stars in the sky!
JanieW-great save using the polka dots--they really add a pop to your block.

I have to watch all the oohing and aahing I do here in the coffee shop---I get some really strange looks!

janRN 05-02-2012 08:08 AM

QE we were posting at the same time. Love your blocks and yes Patches would be loving that kind of rain!!

QuiltingNinaSue 05-02-2012 08:08 AM

QuiltE, I took a second look at your EV and seen something familiar about it...love how you used the blue fabric! Love everyone's sail boat and Mirabelle's roses. She just keeps all of us enjoying those roses!! So well done. Its another wonderful Wednesday with all this "eye" candy.

QuiltE 05-02-2012 08:14 AM

JanRN ... oh those coffee shop people are just all too jealous!

Patches ... don't eat too many of them. It's not good for your tummy and you do have to be able to run and jump after those balls and frisbies!! :)

QNSue ... Eagle Eyed you are! That block's all about youuuuu, all 3 fabrics, plus of course, for my anchor yellow. Yes those star/snowflakes were tricky devils to FC/PP!!! :)

gardnergal970 05-02-2012 08:41 AM

Wendig...so peacefully sailing under the puffy white clouds. Both block very good

JanieW...I would never have seen the polka dots. Great recovery...not a mistake.

QuiltE...watch out below...and they talk about raining cats and dogs. At least they are cushioned by fur. Be sure and wear your hard hat! Your other block is so precise. Love the snowflake fussy cutting.

JanRN...can't wait to see what you have for us. Does your Mom quilt too?

I made the sail boat but decided to substitute a block with some ponies (thank you, Anne). I'm not sure what I was thinking (or drinking) when I did Everyone's Favorite but I sure mixed up the color placement. Let's call it Artistic License (not oops!)

QuiltE 05-02-2012 02:05 PM

JanRN ... both are great blocks and perfectly done! What a pretty floral print and we can continue to see it making appearances in future blocks too. Your EvFav is definitely a favourite for me, as it looks like a cousin to MiraB's fabrics!

Termi 05-02-2012 04:06 PM

QuiltE, oh what fun in your boat block, just beautiful! The cloud fabric looks very familiar. Great contrast in EF and beautiful fabrics. Great job on both!

JanRN, your EF is just beautiful. I think it looks great! Love your pony block too, nice job on both!

oksewglad 05-02-2012 04:14 PM

Okay you have me wanting to get to the sewing machine and finish my EvF block.
mbelle-that soft green is showing up again and another delightful FC rose.
Ggal-great FC in EvF. Doesn't look like the same fabric as the corner triangles. Swirls in the boat, a batik, perhaps?
Wendi-gradation of blues in boat block spot on. FC cowboy, is he looking over the fresh spring range? That's what your block said to me.
Janie-SSHHHH. We won't tell that you misfigured. Your fabric arrangement artfully puts the spotlight on the apples in the center. Great use of clouds.
OK QE, chuckling over it's raining cat (treats) and dog (biscuits)!! Every trail hand needs a pair of leather gloves and yes QNS, I recognized the fabrics as yours, too.
Jan, wonderful artistic license as it takes a new spin on the EvF block. The Double 4P showcases your FC ponies so well.
Thanks for the show so far, folks!

As the day approaches it's close, here are my two. New printer, new scanner and think the colors are more real than others. I'm going to have to watch dublb--she may snatch this one!! Anyone recognize the center? Oh and what a dull sailboat!!! Careful or this one will get bogged down in "muddy" waters.:D

gardnergal970 05-03-2012 04:23 AM

JanRN...quiltere don't make mistakes. It's an unconscious decision to change the pattern. EF turned out lovely and the 4P really shows off the horses. Nice work.

Oksewglad...muddy waters...hee, hee, doen't look like your little boats is slowing down for it. Your EF is very nice. Really shows off the eagle!

janRN 05-03-2012 04:35 AM

Thanks everyone for your nice comments on my blocks. Ggal, no one in my family quilted although my mother and aunt taught me to sew; made all my clothes in high school.
OKSew, love the fussy cutting in EF and just call your sailboat a little storm at sea--beautiful work in both.

Dae Kuczma 05-03-2012 07:07 AM

I've never tried the sail boat pattern. My mother-in-law made one for our first born son and he STILL cherishes the quilt. In fact, he has passed it down to his son of two years old! I love making quilts for my family.....in hopes they too will be passed on to the next generation. Life is good!

oksewglad 05-03-2012 07:23 AM

Like you Jan I'm not from a line of quilters. My mom was just getting started before she died. She was making "utility" type quilts from left over clothes and drapery fabrics and would put an old woven flannel blanket in the middle and then tie them. I've got a log cabin version she used with 3" strips and bring it out for special guests. No it's not pretty but it's what I have and I cherish it. Her father and GF were tailor's in Sweden, then Gpa got the urge to travel west to America and became a farmer, but sewed in his retirement.

Hey do we have a new groupie? Welcome DaeK!

wendiq 05-03-2012 07:34 AM

QuiltE . Two nice blocks.....I love the sky "raining dog goodies"! I think a sense of humor in a quilt is good...:)

Hey do we have a new groupie? Welcome DaeK!

What a heritage you have Oksewglad. I think originally all quilting was utility and you have one of the best from your Mom. My grandmothers both quilted utility quilts and I got my start by snipping the chain pieces for Mom while she made the treadle fly as she made quilts for wedding gifts out of feed sacking. I don't remember too much about the finishing but I think she did them all herself. I took some quilting lessons many years ago but didn't really take it up seriously until about 18 months ago. My goal is to make quilts for all of my family. I'll have 10 done by the middle of next month. I love to quilt!

DaeK...saddle up and travel along with us. We're a fun group.

oksewglad, your EF block is beautiful, very nice contrast and it looks perfectly pieced. I like your little sailboat. It goes well with EF. How do you get your blocks to lay so flat? Mine always come out wavy or bumpy.

gardnergal970 05-03-2012 03:22 PM

Termi...I like your blocks. I'm far from an expert because my blocks get wavy too but for me, most of it is in the pressing and sometimes I don't have the grain right and it stretches as I sew. Let's see was Oksewglad says.

Here are my blocks for this week. I see QuiltE and I used the same fabric for our sky! We must think alike! LOL

janRN 05-03-2012 05:10 PM

Termi, what a cute sail boat block--I love the background fabric with the waves; great fussy cutting in EF. Very nice blocks.

Jeanie, I love EF--it's so bright and cheery and I see you used my favorite fabric for sky in sail boat. Great blocks.

oksewglad 05-03-2012 05:39 PM

Termi and Jeanie, great additions. Love your FC, T, and your sail boat colors especially the striped boat! I see Jeanie's got the raining cat's/dogs fabric too. Great FC in your EF block, too. So cute with the hat and badges with bandana fabrics.

How do they lay flat? EF still has the paper on--won't shift at all!! Since I scan mine with my printer they are pressed flat too. Could be why they are laying flat. Thanks for the kind words. I think I have all the threads cleared off and always seem to have a couple of strays show up.

QuiltE 05-03-2012 06:54 PM

Well, Well ... what a busy place this has been since I last stopped by!
I'll try to catch up now!! :D

OKSGlad ... good call on the raining cats and dogs. Speaking of which, we've had storms going thru all evening, with tornado warnings! I don't think there's any serious worry, though of course, things can change suddenly! As always, your blocks are well done. hhmmm? wonder where that centre FC came from? Worked out well with the other fabrics. Muddy waters? I see storm clouds in the back! :) New printer/scanner is doing a great job.

JanRN ... I didn't have any quilt background in my family either. I know my Mother had made them but not in my time. I too made all my clothes in high school, and most once I started working and after marriage. Even made a coat as well as my wedding dress (no, nothing too intricate). Then life happened, we were busy with the farm, and no time for me and my sewing .... other than to do mending! And on a farm (and with my husband especially), there was LOTS of that to do! I'm SO glad that I got back to the sewing ... particularly discovering my quilting passion.

DaeK ... Welcome to the PC trails!!! Hope you will saddle up and join us. Or perhaps you're getting ready to make a sailboat quilt. With all that history and memories, it'd be ever so special to -remake!

WendiQ ... this quilt is all about humour, and non-sensical stuff for me! I think the yellow has set me free!!!!!

GGal ... OMG ... you've only quilted for 18 months? WOW! You've really mastered things and are motoring! Congratulations!!!!!!!

Termi ... oh how I do like your Fishing Boat ... great match up on those stripes and the sail fabric, just looks like it belongs on the waterfront! And even waves in the water to complete the scene. And EvFav ... those horses are just trotting right along at road speed, I'm sure! You've done yourself proud on bloth blocks.

Your question re getting
blocks laying flat ... there may be different solutions, depending on the cause. Is it because of the bulk of the seams that they do not lay flat? or that the pieces are too big/small and causing the problem? seams of varying widths? fabric becoming stretched?

Some of my solutions, lay in the questions. Plus, I press at every step, after every seam, first setting the seams. Spraying the fabric with Best Press (I've converted from spray starch) before you even start to use it can help to stabilize the fabric, particularly when working bias cuts. And for sure, at the very end, the BP can help get all flattened out. I have had blocks that the bulk of the seams were little mountains, but with pressing and some BP, they flattened right out nicely.

JeanieG ... oh so cute! Yes, we must be thinking alike on this! YOur yellow sails and dark blue boat certainly contrast better than mine. Impressive FCing and piecing on Ev Fav!!

mirabelle 05-03-2012 11:42 PM

Wow everyones blocks are gorgeous, can't wait for Wednesday each week to see what everyones blocks look like.
Thank you all for your kind words, I am really having so much fun
