The FWS Pony Club Quilt-Along wk 24 Indian on Horseback & Jewel Discussion Page

Week 24!!!! We're past the halfway mark!!! not me tho..but that's ok RIGHT!!! right. I'm working on Jewel right now..might get it done tonite...I'm not too keen on the Indian on horse back...I don't like it for some reason... may H.be I will?

carriem 06-19-2012 06:02 PM

No new blocks for me this week. Crystal and I are going to work on getting papers and fabrics cut so the next time we get together we can just sew! Can't wait to see everyone elses blocks. :)

carrie

QuiltingNinaSue 06-19-2012 06:17 PM

No candy to see???? I have been working on other projects that have gotten behind on, and hoped to see what everyone did with this week's blocks. I think I might sub.the Indian Hatchet for Indian and horse.

dublb 06-19-2012 06:33 PM

I don't think I'll be sewin' this week at all. Well maybe on Fri. We've got ta go & close on the house in Brady tamorra' & will stay overnight. DH & DS have ta be back here on Fri. Then if the exterminator says that it is ok we'll be takin' some furniture on Sat.
Whoo, I need a break from just thinkin' about it. Who's got the marshmallows???

QuiltE 06-19-2012 07:37 PM

I'm hoping to get back in the saddle soon .... got my FWS hanging sleeve installed, and was so into it that I finally put one onto my Shabby Chique OBW. So tonight I started cutting out the infamous Monty the Mountie for the International Patriotic Challenge! I need it to be done or well on the way, before I can return to PC sewing. So sad as I so didn't want to fall behind. :(

dublb 06-19-2012 08:45 PM

I'm way behind too. :(

mirabelle 06-20-2012 02:36 AM

I thought I might not make it this week also but my wonderful old Janome just purred along after I gave it a good clean and an oil.
Honchey I didn't do the Indian on Horseback block, it just seemed an odd block to me and also my fabric would not have suited. Hope you like the block I chose....

gardnergal970 06-20-2012 04:20 AM

I didn't get this weeks done or last weeks even posted...they are done. It looks like all of us are busier than a cat on a hot tin roof! Maybe I'll have time to post pics this afternoon. I've had 2 days of quilt classes and have to focus on getting ready to fly out to my DGD's wedding this Friday. Speaking of hot, how has the weather been treating you all? We got over 2 inches of rain last Saturday which was a real relief and now it's been in the 90's every day since. Still cools down reasonably well at night so we haven't put in the window AC. DH likes to go as long as possible without it and he has a system with the fans that works well for out little house, at least for a time.

Dubib...congratulations on the closing. Sounds like you guys will be keeping the road busy between Midland and Brady!

Mirabelle...how is the moving going on in your part of the world? Is your DS the last one living at home?

janRN 06-20-2012 04:22 AM

I did the Indian block but not too fond of it; it also is facing the wrong way ("Go west, young man!") I also didn't paper piece Jewel and it's the wonkiest block I've made. Will try to post later.
After falling on May 26 and all x-rays negative, they repeated my mother's x-rays on Monday and she has 3 broken bones in her foot and a small fracture in her ankle. Now I feel guilty for pushing her at Physical Therapy. So, we start over!

Termi 06-20-2012 06:48 AM

JanRN, that's funny, (go west, young man). I'm not fond of my indian block either, it's very strange looking. Sorry about your Mom. Don't feel guilty, you didn't know. Haven't started Jewel yet. It's going to be so hot today, with high humidity. Will not be a happy camper.

QuiltE, I'm looking forward to seeing your Monty the Mountie.

Honchey 06-20-2012 07:22 AM

QuiltE, you haven't fallen behind.....You're just pulling up the rear and I'm a draggin' behind ya!!!
We don't have central ac just window units and I just turned them on...3 H's today and for the next 3 days...
I have to go to NC next week...contractors have to spackle the settling cracks...I'm glad we waited as long as we have...we found a few more the last time we visited....I will be picking up my sister Carolyn on the way...QuiltE, guess what I'll be doing this coming Tuesday evening????? Bingo!!!
Ladies, be careful of the hot, humid weather...don't go outside...stay inside and sew, sew, sew...H.

oksewglad 06-20-2012 02:42 PM

It's county fair week here! Watching 2 youngest GC while family is working in the 4-H building; 2 GD's have their Clover Kids exhibits evaluated tonight. Pray for rain--looks like a front coming across the Upper Midwest and boy do we need the rain!

I wasn't sure where to post this. Please give me your honest opinion on this sashing color (it's dark blue with swirly green). I always use black for sashing but I kind of like this one. Please be brutally honest--I can take it!!

gardnergal970 06-20-2012 02:49 PM

Jan...I really like your sashing choice. It brings movement and color without overpowering the blocks.

oksewglad 06-20-2012 02:51 PM

What I see I sure like, Jan! Like the quilting too!

QuiltingNinaSue 06-20-2012 04:10 PM

I love the colors and the quilting, JanRN. Blue color is just right, to me.

QuiltE 06-20-2012 04:24 PM

JanRN ... Yepppirrrrrrr ... I sure do like that blue/green with those blocks. <clap><clap><clap> big step away from the black you were promising. I like the "life" in the blue, not so dark that it still looks black!! :) It's really making the colours pop and shine in the blocks and adding to the movement. Sweet! Any thoughts yet for your cornerstones? So sorry about your Mom's breaks ... so sad that they missed it. Ditto as to your not feeling guilty about pushing her in physio ... you have condence in the system and it let you down. Good for you for making the Indian and I'll look forward to seeing him in the other thread. I'll be making him, though I won't say that he'll make it into the quilt!

Honchey ... Chances are, I'm further back in the dust than you! Yea for your NC visit and for taking DS! As for the BINGO, I think you're going to have to do a block, dedicated to just that!

OKSGlad ... Here come the Judge! Here comes the Judge!! :) Look forward to hearing all about the County Fair, the quilt judge and your Grands. Oh don't forget to show us a pic of the basket/coffin and tell us more as to what it's all about! PLease?

Termi ... trot on over to the Intl Patriotic Thread ... Monty made a preliminary debut today!

MiraB ... so glad that your machine is purring after it's Humpty Dumpty!

GGal ... do hope that it's a tad cooler for the wedding. Nothing worse than having to get all dressed up and it be miserably hot! We've had some rain, but not a lot. What we did get, has really made the crops jump ... though not far away, things are bleak. Wheat is heading out, and starting to colour a little. Everyone is pushing with the hay right now! No a/c here either, just in my truck!! Luckily I can seek refuge downstairs .... sewing yipppeeeee .... and I have a guest suite that I can "stay" in!

I plan on running to Fair tomorrow for the dog show. Will take the camera with and try to get pictures of the QShow et al. GS got a blue on his heifer calf today and several blue ribbons on his other exhibits--had a state poster; a cookie comparison-compared from scratch cookies to BC pouch mix and ready to bake cookies--from scratch were 2cents a cookie cheaper than the other two. He had a taste test on willing victims this weekend, only 1 chose the pouch mix over the homemade as the better tasting. Also entered some photos and the cookie challenge. One recipe for all--let's see how they compare. Tomorrow's dog obedience--may be trickier to get a blue there; Bandit weighs almost as much as he does! Here he is with Zelda, his December heifer calf

QuiltingNinaSue 06-20-2012 06:31 PM

Lovely calf and handsome GS. Will look forward to more pictures and news, oksewglad.

Honchey 06-20-2012 06:50 PM

Jan, I really like the blue you chose for the sashing....

I know you're so proud of your GS,Oksewglad.. that calf is so pretty...

QuiltE, I just designed a block after a Bingo game they call Indian Star.. its a letter X with a + superimposed on it and I just added a couple of triangles to add an arrow design in it. I think it's pretty, but I can't figure out how to show it here...If I create a block on EQ 7 can I share it online???

QuiltE 06-20-2012 07:44 PM

OKSGlad ... looks like the 4-H show has started off well for your Grands! Too funny on the cookie comparison and resuslts. You'll ahve to get pics of the dog show ... I think this is such a wonderful 4-H club project! Congratulations to DGS and Zelda for making such a great team and their blue/first ribbon!!

Honchey ... I'm no geek to advise you, though our very own OKSGlad has shared EQ drawings here with us before. If you design it and show it, I'll make it ... just for you!!!!!!! :)

mirabelle 06-20-2012 07:46 PM

GardnerGal970, the moving is going slowly, we moved a few boxes yesterday when he received the keys after settlement went through. Unfortunately this is really bad timing for him as he works at the Sugar Mill and the harvest season started last Sunday so we will have to move him slowly on his days off. He works long hours 13 to 14 hours a day and his Dad is only home every second week. I keep telling him to have patience but he is so excited.

Our daughter left home when she was almost 17 (with our blessings) she had to move away from home to do her chef's apprenticeship, she has come home a couple of times and now lives an hour and a half drive away. So in a few weeks we will be empty nesters. I must admit I am a little excited and also a little sad. But I am sure DS will be popping in regularly especially at meal times:D

mirabelle 06-20-2012 07:48 PM

JanRN I love the blue is really makes the blocks pop. I think black might be too harsh, just my opinion.

I finally figured out how to show my block...I discovered how to print a photo of it...then I scanned it....and here it is!!!!

Yikes!!! I forgot to make it smaller...sorry

janRN 06-21-2012 04:30 AM

Thanks all-I'm going to use that dark blue sashing and I really appreciate your input.

OK-thanks for posting the pic of GS with cow---I've never been that close to a cow in my life (and don't think I want to be LOL). Can't wait for more pics from the fair.

Anne, you're doing so well with EQ7. I'm still a dinosaur when it comes to anything other than one block at a time. I like the block you designed.

Mirab-I thought I'd be sad at being an empty-nester. Yep, for 5 minutes!! Good luck.

QE just looked at Monty--he's cute!!! Love the mustache.

So much going on in all of our lives! Jan, my DMIL went to her daughter's wedding with a broken hip. She had fallen a few days before but refused to go to the Dr. When we took her in the next week she just smiled sheepishly and said she was glad that she got to go to the wedding.
QNSue...your little ones are sure getting big. Sounds like your garden is producing too. I missed most of my peas when I was in TX they came on so fast.
OKSewglad...the county fair...sure brings back good memories. We showed beef but they smell the same!
QuiltE...your Mountie is coming right along. My Texas star is still on the design wall but behind everything else I've been doing.
Mirabelle...glad your machine is purring and you're feeling like sewing. I told my kids when they were asking what we would do after they left and I said that having them was just a happy outcome of our being together which is what we got married for.
Hounchey...always a place for hobbies in the quilts we make. I like your Bingo design.
I've probably left someone out of these notes but my memory just doesn't hold everything all of the time. I do appreciate your participation and comments on this trail and will catch up with you again sometime.
Now for what has been keeping me busy. Here are pictures of the 3 quilts that I've made as gifts. I've also gotten blocks for a mystery quilt done but need to figure out just how to put them together is a quilt. The first quilt is for my DS's 25th Anniversary, the second is for my DGD's wedding and the last is a crib quilt for my DH's first GGS. I'm off to SC for the wedding and will check in next week but will enjoy the eye candy while I'm gone.

oksewglad 06-21-2012 06:13 AM

I've been chuckling with my DDIL--4-H mom has learned she has to back off--let the child do his own. Another learning process for parents too!
Jan you should see the little ones around our cows--for the most part all are very gentle. The favorite is the biggest cow in the barn. She loves little ones. 2 yo GD (a city girl, too) was so excited that she got to pet Dove.
Anne what a great block! When you go to the File tab I "Export Image" (this automatically saves to "My EQ7" file). A dialog box will pop up. The default image size is 8 x 8 inches. I usually change the size to 4 x 4.
We posted at the same time GGal--what wonderful finishes. Great MQ on the 2nd quilt! Have a great time during your trip.

janRN 06-21-2012 06:26 AM

Ggal you made me tired just reading your post--you are one busy lady! I love your quilts--beautiful! Did you quilt them yourself? And the colors--awesome, and so well done. I bet the recipients were blown away. Sorry about your MIL-they are hard-headed and will do what they want. Hope she recovers well.

Termi 06-21-2012 09:58 AM

JanRN, I really like your sashing. It's very pretty and really sets off the blocks.

Termi 06-21-2012 10:00 AM

oksewglad, that's the cutest pair I've ever seen. Such a great picture of the calf and your GS.

Termi 06-21-2012 10:37 AM

QuiltE, I just trotted over to the Int'l Patriotic Challenge and your Monty is quite the dashing fellow!! I like the mustache as the only facial feature and the horse will look fabulous next to him. You're very creative.

OOOpps, don't know how I got 2 of the same post.

carriem 06-21-2012 05:56 PM

Back home again...didn't get a lot of cutting done the past couple days, but we did go to 3 quilt shops. Crystal and I both were able to find a few more FQs for our pony club blocks (30s for her and KT for me). :) We had a great little trip with the kids and they didn't complain too much about going to quilt shops as we found other fun places to stop in-between. I also bought fabric and a pattern for a table topper...needed something for a wedding this weekend! Guess what I will be working on tomorrow? I'll post a pic when I am done. carrie

dublb 06-22-2012 04:59 PM

Boy are we a busy group!
Honchey - beautiful block!
Meribelle - I understand about that empty nest comin' up. Though DS recently told us that he is still gonna stay in Midland & go ta Midland College one more year. He's the last one.
OK - it sounds like ya are havin' a good time at the fair. Your DGSon looks so proud.
Jan - I love that blue w/your blocks!! It ties 'em all tagether! I'm so sorry about your DM. I know that I used ta make my DMIL walk outside every day for about 10 min.s The Dr said that she needed the exercise. (I pushed her pretty hard ta do it.) After a while I realized that she had more trouble when I walked her. I had ta decide what ta do. I know that your DM needs the therapy, so you were doin' what you thought was best, with the info you had at the time. {{{HUGS}}}
Carrie & Crystal went on a FART (& did some other things!) Fun!
GG - Your quilts are gorgeous!!!

I did sign on my "new" lake house in Brady!
Yippie! (I found out that it was built in 1920 & was a farm house, & someone moved it ta Brady in 1966! My DGP's bought it in 1982 & GM sold it in 2006 after DGDad died died in '05.) Now I gotta do a lot'a work on it. :p Inside needs paintin' & all o'the floorin' needs to be replaced. The hot water heater quit heatin' that afternoon. Lots ta do! We are gonna check out the store room & figure what we want ta take & do a few other things here in Midland this weekend & go back next weekend.
My DGM is so excited :)

Here is the table topper I made for a wedding gift....this is some of what I bought Thursday. :) Definitely a pattern I will make again! It is ~22" finished. (original pattern was 44" and used 8 strips so I just cut everything in half).

I started this table topper yesterday. Just had to sew one seam on the top this morning and then quilt and bind. I decided to use heat resistant batting so it can be used as a hot pad too.

carriem

Sorry the one picture is a little blurry!!

QuiltingNinaSue 06-23-2012 05:20 PM

Lovely job; very colorful and useful. Lucky couple who gets the gift.

mirabelle 06-23-2012 05:51 PM

Ggal your quilts are beautiful well done,
Carriem I love your tabletopper, is that a smaller version. I made one and it was huge..

carriem 06-23-2012 06:06 PM

Mirabelle--the original pattern was 44" across and used 8 strips. It is called "Crazy Eight Strip Teaser". I made it with 4 strips and cut the triangles with the base half of what the pattern said to...it finished right around 22". I thought the big one was too big for what I needed, but really liked the pattern so figured I would buy it and make it work.

Ggal--I agree your quilts are really great! I missed them earlier.

dublb 06-23-2012 06:11 PM

Oh! Carrie, it sure is purdy!
