The FWS Pony Club Quilt-Along wk 40 (WOW!) Sheep Fold & Star of Hope Discussion Page

I didn't think I'd have room for the WOW!...I think the cooler weather has the group talking more...Very Nice!..Sheep Fold is very appropiate for the group getting together.. I am still getting it together...Thanks QNS for the stuff I couldn't find around here...I should have it done soon...I donated a quilt for a fund raiser that my niece is sponsering for the Boy's Scouts..She's very active in the group with her 2 sons...I'll be going to the "Tricky Tray" this Friday... I'll post a photo of it later after I get DS to hold it uo for me...I'm working this Thursday...Yay! a fun day for me...Time for dinner then to the sewing machine....H.

QuiltingNinaSue 10-09-2012 04:15 PM

Coming down for the final quarter mile, time to weed out what we are going to use and what we are not going to use.. two more blocks to design tomorrow, then I can sew the last eight blocks and go on to other things I have ask to do...:o:thumbup: How do we get volunteered and say 'yes' when its 'maybe' or 'no'...???

Keeping family happy is a full time job, weather its just dh or the whole clan of Ma & Pa Kettle. To bad we did not have 13 kids to raise, 'cause I keep on cookin' up too much food...and hate to waste it...rather have it go to someone's waist...and our kids all live too far away. Bf is too far away...she can drive now, on limited distances...love to butcher turkeys, but there is no room in the freezer and I have begun to doubt about having the freezer free up much...may have to can the turkeys!

carriem 10-09-2012 04:20 PM

It is hard to believe it has been 40 weeks! I decided not to make these blocks since I don't "need" them for my 2 quilts. Instead I chose some harder ones (what was I thinking??). I am working on "Kansas" right now...didn't get to sew today and I work tomorrow, so Thursday will be the day I finish and hopefully get a couple more done. Other than school and a little squirrel hunting with ds I don't have much going on.

dublb 10-09-2012 08:07 PM

40 weeks! Oh wow, I'm so far behind. I really have enjoyed this pony ride. Soon I'll be makin' my blocks I promise.

Here is how I'm planning to put my PC quilt together. I've slapped it on the design wall just to get a feel if what I was thinking would even work. I really like the results for the layout. The real test will be when I start quilting blocks and putting them together. I know that there are variances in the block dimensions so it will still be challenging to use PC blocks as backings and have a completely reversible quilt. I'm figuring 50 blocks per side since I'll have the bonus blocks to work with. I haven't had a cold in YEARS so the one I'm battling is making up for it. QNSue, I think the Vicks is working. I didn't cough as much last night but I couldn't even smell it when I put it on even though my head seems to be pretty clear. Yup, it's settled in my chest and completely sapped my energy. I might be able to cut out a block later but it sure can't be very challenging! My joining strips will be a 3/4 inch dark green which will keep the PC blocks from getting lost entirely. QuiltE 10-10-2012 06:49 AM

OMG GGal ... that's incredible!! I'm awestruck!
I know you are wanting to do QAYG, but have you thought of just joining these as is?
I like the way they are with those alternating blocks. It gives an Irish Chain look to it.
Probably there's a proper quilting name to those blocks and the design they create.
I REALLY like how it is bringing the colours together ... and I think you'd lose that with the strips when doing QAYG.
Just some thoughts from the Peanut Gallery!! :D

So that's side one ... what is going to be on side two?
I wait in total anticipation to see what it will be like!

oksewglad 10-10-2012 07:14 AM

GGal that's incredible. The gentle curve in the center of the connecting block adds such a subtle rhythm to the overall design and softens all the sharp points in the blocks.
QNS--freezer full? less car trips to the grocery store!! You two are a self sufficient pair.

Note to Carrie--yes I'll make bonus blocks so add my name to the list!
Gotta dash--today is recycle day at the local garbage pickup and have lots of plastic to get rid of. Then off to LFC (local feed co-op) to pick up winter rye for DH to plant this afternoon. Had a little shower yesterday with a 70% chance of rain on Sat. Timing would be wonderful if that happened.

janRN 10-10-2012 07:20 AM

Oh wow, Oh wow, Ggal. That is incredible. I love the way the curved blocks add movement. I agree with QE about maybe not using sashing--it would break up the "path" the curved blocks make. Oh wow! I'm speechless!!

QuiltE 10-10-2012 07:21 AM

*giggle* LFC! :)

<clap><clap><clap>
Yeaaaaaaaaa!!!!
I'm glad there'll be OKSGlad BBs!!! :D

JeanieG 10-10-2012 03:17 PM

GG - I love your quilt just as it is. Those alternating blocks are wonderful! I agree with QuiltE and Jan, you will lose the pattern if you put sashing strips on. But whatever you do, it is gorgeous!

dublb 10-10-2012 03:48 PM

GG, it's gonna be wonderful. I think if ya use a tiny connectin' strip it will not change the look very much. I can't wait till ya finish it so I can see how it comes out. :)

carriem 10-10-2012 04:22 PM

WOW Ggal! You have been busy with all those "in between" blocks! They look so pretty. I am with Bev...I think you can use a narrow strip between and still get the same effect. Can't wait to see it all together!

I am looking forward to some sewing time tomorrow. I will finish getting the blocks together for a table runner and border on...will wait to quilt it until the weekend. Then am going to get a few more PC blocks done. :) I have time to sew the next three days....haven't had much since last Friday so am looking forward to it!

i just wanted to show you guys the jelly roll quilt I donated to my niece's Tricky Tray on Friday ....

janRN 10-10-2012 05:01 PM

How cute is that, Anne!! I bet your niece loves it.

QuiltE 10-10-2012 05:01 PM

Nicely done, Honchey!!!
How kind of you to donate to help the Scouts.

But what is Tricky Tray?

carriem 10-10-2012 05:05 PM

Honchey--I like how that turned out especially with the black squares between the strips. I will definitely be doing that the next time I make one of these quilts!

Honchey 10-10-2012 06:08 PM

Thanks for the compliments....Actually, the squares are a chocolate brown with blue accents and every seam is dtitched in the ditch....no FM for me yet...it measures 50" x 70"... ahhhh, a tricky tray is a chinese auction...which is a whole bunch of gifts on a table with a little container in front of it ...you purchase a card that has let's say 20 or 30 tabs with a # on it....you tear off a tab and put it in the container and hope your ticket gets pulled for that gift...they also have tables set up for gifts that are higher in cost and you have to purchase different tickets for them...they have door prizes also.... All the gifts are donated....It's a fun night out...being that it's my niece sponsering it I have to attend...it's about 90 miles away and I'm sleeping over so I know I'm going to have fun...all the women in our family will be there to support her...All I have to do is sign the quilt..I need a pigma pen to do that..I will get it at work tomorrow...

dublb 10-10-2012 06:15 PM

What is a Tricky Tray, Hounchey? Your quilt is so cute.
Oops, Ya already answered.
It sounds like ya are gonna have a great time.

oksewglad 10-10-2012 06:35 PM

What a nice quilt--I like the dark squares too, Anne. Feels good when one donates to a good cause.

JeanieG 10-10-2012 07:50 PM

The orange in the quilt really makes it "pop". I also like the square you added, I've not seen one with them in it before. You will get a lot of tickets for this one Anne!

QuiltE 10-11-2012 01:56 AM

Thanks Honchey ... Chinese Auction I understand and now know another name!
Our Jersey Club do these at their AGMs and call it "Drop in the Bucket" (milk bucket!) ... and were always a fun thing.

Looks like a FUN night out for you ... we'll look forward to hearing what you bring home from the Tricky Tray! :)

carriem 10-11-2012 08:04 AM

Just wanted to let those who are doing the PC Bonus Blocks know that we have 11 people signed up for the swap. So if you want a block of your own, you'll need to make 11.

Thanks!
Carrie

janRN 10-11-2012 08:08 AM

Thanks, carriem. Are we doing 8" finished blocks like PC? I'm excited to do these for everyone.

carriem 10-11-2012 09:09 AM

Yes Jan---same as our PC blocks. :) That way for those who want to use them with their other blocks they will fit!

I sent an email to those who are signed up. If you don't get one, please let me know.

dublb 10-11-2012 09:33 AM

I bought some TX fabric. If any o' ya'll don't want red white & blue (TX colors also) let me know. Oh this is gonna be so fun.

QuiltingNinaSue 10-11-2012 10:43 AM

Cream color or off white might be better with mine, as there is not hardly any white in my PC quilt, 'cause I want to put the PC extended blocks right on front of the quilt. Thanks for asking.

dublb 10-11-2012 11:07 AM

Alright, not ta self; coffee stain Sue's blocks. (Like I did the fabric ya sent me.:) )

carriem 10-11-2012 01:41 PM

Bev--I would say cream would be better to go with my fabrics too...if it isn't too much trouble. :)

Thanks, Carrie

QuiltE 10-11-2012 01:47 PM

CarrieM ... I know this would be extra work for you, but chances are some of us (especially me!) will miss some of these requests. What about asking the 11 people to respond to a questionnaire? And then email us the summaries for all? Just a thought, so we can try to keep everyone happy!! :)

carriem 10-11-2012 02:06 PM

I am willing to do that.

If anyone thinks of things they want to ask others before starting their blocks, let me know and I will collect a list to email to everyone. I know a couple people have started working on their blocks and I am sure we will all be happy with whatever we get...no one is too picky and we all appreciate your work on your blocks!!!

carrie

dublb 10-11-2012 02:42 PM

Ya'll know that I got cream.:)

QuiltE 10-11-2012 02:55 PM

For me, I'll be thrilled to receive whatever surprises come my way!

I haven't started my blocks, though I have been thinking of what I will do, and I think I have that figured out!!! And I vow to one and all that I will get them done according to the deadline ... even if in the meantime that means I get nothing else done! :)

Carrie, I only made the suggestion as requests were starting to pop up ... and I fear I will not remember when the time comes and/or will miss some of the requests, as I will be away for another couple of weeks again, soon. I've missed so much this last while, and hopefully won't mess up!! I just hope we don't get too buried in rules!!! :)

Honchey 10-11-2012 07:20 PM

Ditto for the cream..

janRN 10-12-2012 04:13 AM

I also will be happy with whatever you ladies make. I'm so impressed by your skills and color choices. I plan to make a wall hanging out of them to hang in my sewing room to remind me of this great pony ride.

I'm off to a quilt show (and a FART) today. Will let you know if anything interesting follows me home LOL>

mirabelle 10-12-2012 04:17 AM

OMG Ggal your quilt top is drop dead gorgeous, I love love love your connecting blocks with the curve, did you have a pattern that gave you the inspiration, I am always intrigued as to how someone comes up with these fantastic ideas.
I see patterns and put them in my memory bank but I think it is full:D

I am happy with whatever blocks, color, design etc I receive

gardnergal970 10-12-2012 04:52 AM

Thanks, Mirabelle. The setting block is from a Kansas Troubles pattern called Skipping Stones. It is a simple four patch done in HST with raw edge appliqué for the design element. They really went together fast and showed me that I still need to do more work with values. Some of my lights became mediums and some blocks lost their punch. Right now the appliqué is only glued on so when I do the quilting, attaching the appliqué will be the quilting. I've never done anything like that before and am keeping my fingers crossed. How is your Jamestown coming? I'm keeping an eye out for Bonnie's mystery quilt.
JanR...that's so sweet that you're making a wall hanging of the bonus blocks. Actually a very good idea.
I won't limit anyone in their bonus block for me. My quilt has just grown without a plan so anything will fit somewhere!

MiraB .... read my siggy! :D

JanRN ... here's to a fun day ... and a good ol' FART! :) Perhaps some photos to show us from the show?

GGal ... Don't fret about the lights that became mediums, and mediums that became darks ... I think that's part of what was helping to blend it all together nicely I was really amazed at how the design of the Skipping Stones showed (note, I've dropped Irish Chain-look!) and yet didn't detract from the PC blocks. They work well togehter. Good idea on the raw edge applique ..... perhaps you'd show us a closer up view so we can see the design of the SS blocks? Please? and Thanks!

QNSue ... I've been doing the Vicks Bobby Sox routine the last few nights ... and things aren't budging on this cold. What do you suggest next?

JanRN ... follow up from your earlier post that I just read yesterday! Did you do the sensory quilt/blanket for your friend? If you're still looking for info, google "tactile blanket" plus there's been several threads here. Some ideas ... velcro for those pockets and do a pocket within a pocket, within a pocket!! Minkee, corduroy, velvet, embroidery, snaps, eyelets with string or ribbon or fabric to lace thru, faux fur, pin tucks, ruching (sp?) etc. And of course, maybe you have completed it ... though you may want to make another one! :)

QuiltE 10-12-2012 05:29 AM

Ladies ... I have a question for you!

I so wanted to see your block groupings and went off ISO ... has there been a grouping thread since the block 45 milestone? Or did I miss it with my cold induced dead brain?

jclinganrey 10-12-2012 05:45 AM

I'm not part of this particular quilt-along but am really enjoying your beautiful work. I have a question: what does FWS stand for??? I've seen the various posts & groups and I'm baffled!!! Thanks for 'educating' me.

Jane
