The FWS Pony Club Quilt-Along wk 43 Telephone & Virginia Discussion Page

Hi, I decided to post this thread early as I still have electric...don't know for how long...I've been busy doing alot of running around just trying to make sure I have everything needed for us during this storm...Making a big pot of stew today...I have every jug, jar,and pot filled with water...even the blender...I'll be filling the washer later today...The dunes in Point Pleasant Beachare just short of being breeched then the flooding begins in that area....I will try to do some cutting later today for these blocks...can't seem to concentrate on sewing....

QuiltingNinaSue 10-29-2012 04:49 AM

Stay save, Honchey. We experienced that waiting and worry when hurricanes hit Texas while we were there. News media does tend to "add" more concern to make more news these days...may you find it so too...that it is mainly really the 'hot air' of media adding to the story. May the real thing be a lesser thing for all to face there.

carriem 10-29-2012 01:29 PM

Honchey--not sure if you still have power, but wanted to say I am thinking of you and all the others on the east coast.

JeanieG 10-29-2012 01:29 PM

Your in my prayers Anne! Keep safe!

mirabelle 10-29-2012 01:35 PM

My prayers and thoughts are with you Anne and everyone else who may be effected by this storm. Stay safe.

janRN 10-29-2012 05:17 PM

Hope everyone is safe. We're good here so far; high winds now, and higher still predicted for overnight. Had to run to Walmart for dog food this am--what a zoo!! It was really crowded at 9 am and there was no bread, little milk, and no bottled water. This is scarey and we're 100s of miles from the coast. It has been so dark all day; and rain--lots of rain some of it coming down sideways. Poor Patches! He's had his legs crossed because he really has to pee and won't go out (well I wouldn't want to pee outside in this either). DH finally held an umbrella over him so he could go. Poor DH now is soaked LOL.
Please stay safe everyone!

I just read the other thread first, and asked you about the hurricane - thanks for the update! Stay safe!

Prayers said for all in the path.

mirabelle 10-30-2012 02:13 AM

JanRN hope you are safe, am thinking of you

QuiltE 10-30-2012 03:16 AM

Good Morning Ladies ... and I hope it is a Good one!

Honchey ... do hope that things weren't so bad for you, though from the TV last night, I am filled with fright. Looks like you prepared as best you could. I'm sure your mind is far from doing any sewing!

QNSue ... ITA the media does create the sensation and fright around all things ... weather, wars, tusnamis, fires, etc.

JanRN ... I think you just gave us our morning smile with Patches under the umbrella, and your DH getting soaked! Good Man that MrJanRN is!!! :)

Yesterday I was thinking and reading some about Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and was wondering how this compared? From its devastation, so much good came, with flood control planning and installations all across the province. So far here, it's been a lot of wind and rain ... certainly nothing where I was frightened to the max and felt my home was going to blow away. Although at times like this, I wonder about the trees all around my home and hope they don't decide to topple. Now, while I don't think things were so bad ... I have to temper that knowing I have the shelter of the bush ... I may hear and see otherwise beyond!!

Stay Safe, Honchey and JanRN!

QuiltE 10-30-2012 06:31 AM

Just heard Honchey's Governor on TV .... the devastation is unprecedented; worse than he ever could imagine possible when he went out to see it; devastation 2 x's worse than Hurricane Irene; Irene 1.2 million homes, this time double; 8 days to get power restored and back to some semblance of order; we have a lot of work to do (understatement of the year, for sure!)

Oh Honchey ... my ♥ goes out to you. I am so sad for you.

deranged_damsel 10-30-2012 07:09 AM

STAY SAFE!!! my prayers are with you <3

gardnergal970 10-30-2012 08:26 AM

I saw reports from Pleasant Beach NJ which Honchey mentioned being 10 miles from her and she said if that was breached, they would have flooding. It was breached! There are no more dunes between the ocean and town. The three lakes in town have become one. He showed parking meters with only about 18 inches showing above the sand. No sign of the street. The area is without power. We might not hear from Honchey for a few days. Pray the trees around her will do no damage to her home or property.

QuiltE 10-30-2012 09:17 AM

Good memory, GGal ... and how many were like me and grabbed their map books to check in on "where"! :)

Also checked on JanRN's location... just realized we are due north/south! :) hhmmmmm? If that Lake was not in the way, we'd be MUCH closer. Though, if we both headed to Niagara Falls .................. :)

QuiltE 11-01-2012 04:21 AM

Ladies ... I'm almost gone!
See you in a couple of weeks.

Honchey ... here's hoping life will have come back to a "little" bit of normalcy for you by the time I return. Or perhaps I should say, the new normal. Also, as said by your Governor ... "we have a lot of work to do".

gardnergal970 11-01-2012 05:17 AM

I happened across this site from another thread this morning and thought you all might find it interesting. The prices are great and the shipping is in line. http://www.marshalldrygoods.com/. You international quilters might find it something you could use.

Honchey 11-01-2012 05:47 PM

Hi everyone, I survived Sandy. I still don't have my pc running yet but as soon as I get it running I will let you know.

I am typing this for my sister Honchey, my name is Carolyn. Honchey has been out of all electricity since the storm and got it back late today. She had some branches fall but no other problems. We all need to be thankful for what we have.

Honchey 11-01-2012 05:59 PM

I just hung up the phone from talking with my sister Honchey and she is very relieved because she now has POWER. She is going to relax and soak in the tub, I thought you'd like to know that. All of you ladies have a wonderful day. God bless you, Carolyn

dublb 11-01-2012 07:17 PM

Oh Carolyn, thank you so much! I was so worried. I'm so relieved. Tell her that we have been prayin' hard for her.

oksewglad 11-01-2012 07:26 PM

I've been checking several times for news of her. You're a great sister to let us know. Thanks, Carolyn.

QuiltingNinaSue 11-02-2012 04:09 AM

Thanks, Carolyn, its nice to hear that Honchey has power on again!! thank goodness, they are OK. So much has happened there and so much damage done, it will take weeks to get things back like housing for 181 families whose homes are burned down. And now gasoline is scarce there, so no one can go anywhere to speak of..bridges that are down, subways filled with water...my heart goes out to them who are in need...

mirabelle 11-02-2012 04:26 AM

Carolyn thank you so much for letting us know that Honchey is ok. There were a lot of prayers said for her and everyone affected by this terrible event

gardnergal970 11-02-2012 05:43 AM

Carolyn, I echo the many thanks. I've watched every news cast and so many came from Pleasant Point Beach and the devastation was so awful. I'm glad you are safe as well.

carriem 11-02-2012 06:00 AM

So happy to hear that Honchey is alright.

I haven't been posting much this week. Was busy early in the week, worked Wednesday and then had a migraine yesterday...feeling some better today but it usually hits me in the afternoon (and is rarely just one day), so will get done what I can this morning...including checking in here. :)

Anyone working on PC Bonus blocks yet? We are up to 13 people so I think that is great!!

gardnergal970 11-02-2012 06:17 AM

Carrie...sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I have the "bones" of my blocks completed but not completely assembled. I've put it aside to work on Dresden Plate valances for a friend. I made her a table runner for house warming and she loved the colors and pattern and I got sucked into the valances. I like the way they are turning out. Just have to figure out the tabs, sandwich and quilt. Probably a couple more days of work if I do it right.

Felt better all in all today...got a little sewing done. I am working on samples for the quilt shop where I work. Yesterday during some of my good time I got a card made for the card club I am in...it is my month to design.

JeanieG 11-02-2012 05:49 PM

Oh wow Carrie, that is beautiful Fabric! Love your card too!

dublb 11-02-2012 06:09 PM

Oooo! How elegant!

mirabelle 11-03-2012 02:15 PM

Carrie I love the border print you have used, great job:thumbup:

Honchey 11-05-2012 04:27 PM

HI, I"M BACKKK!!!!!! My cable/internet came on at 6:03 p.m...this evening...8 days..no tv, no internet...my electric was back on Thursday evening... 30% of my town is still without electric...several towns over still 50% no electric... they have run out of telephone poles... a new storm coming this way again...what else can happen...I The devastation is unbelievable...heartbreaking..I have been so distracted by all of these happenings...have not done a bit of machine sewing. I did hand sew by lantern+ candle light my hex's that I English pieced in 2004...that's when I had my knee replaced...I picked them out of the shopping bag one by one...my fingers were very sore for several days...especially my thumb... My son and DH cut up a couple of downed trees in the back of the property...they were kind of dead from the storm last year...My DH is really happy the tv is back...the click, click of the remote.....ahhhh...

dublb 11-05-2012 04:56 PM

Yeah for Anne! We've been lost w/out ya.
Actually we've all been busy. I'm gittin' ready for my retreat this weekend. I don't want ta take a ton o' stuff. I want my things all ready ta sew.
But we haven't been postin' w/out ya. I'm so glad that ya are safe & sound. We missed ya so much, & now we can git down ta PC stuff. :)

JeanieG 11-05-2012 05:56 PM

I'm glad your safe and sound Anne! I duplicate what dublb says. We were really worried about you!

Glad you're okay and back on the trail, Anne. Still praying for your area--I can't believe the devastation. I'm a Weather Channel junkie and have watched it since the storm hit. Unbelievable.

I needed a break from Pony Quilt so this is what I've been working on. It's the first project I quilted on the Sweet 16; wow, am I humbled! I need lots of practice. Don't know how well the quilting will show in this pic, almost hope it doesn't LOL.

QuiltingNinaSue 11-05-2012 06:38 PM

I am impressed, JanRN. You need to keep that handy, as your first one, and see the improvement on each one you do. At least, you have done one...those LA machines are scary to me, I'd rather pay someone for doing it.

I am very thankful that Honchey made it through the storm in high style, and they had clear sailing through it...I know how Mother Nature can really put on a show. It will take awhile before things can return somewhat back to normal there.

dublb 11-05-2012 07:20 PM

Jan I'm so proud o' ya for jumpin' in & gittin' that quilted. Every one ya do, will be better & better! What I see looks good.

Honchey--very happy to hear you are back with us.

Jan--fun little quilt

Here is what I did today...started with a large butterfly fabric. This is the fabric I am using for a quilt on our bed. Dh isn't thrilled about the butterflies but really likes the colors so by cutting them up it works. I will get butterflies in the border...they are a bit smaller so not so overwhelming. :)

dublb 11-05-2012 08:57 PM

Ohhhhh Carrie! It's beautiful!

JeanieG 11-05-2012 09:16 PM

Carrie, that is wonderful. Is that a "stack n whack" design?

Honchey 11-05-2012 09:43 PM

Carriem, very pretty butterflies....Have you slowed down at all??? Good to be back...I missed all the chatter and you guys....

carriem 11-06-2012 05:15 AM

Thanks for the compliments...I saw this fabric at Market in the spring and was so happy when we got it in the shop. :)

Jeanie--I have never used the "stack-n-whack" books for my kaleidoscope quilts so am not sure how they do them. This is 4 layers of repeat, pinned on top of each other (very carefully lined up) and then cut into squares. The other kind I have made was using a free pattern called "spin cycle"...same idea only after cutting the squares you cut them and half and cut off one corner of the triangle to make a "kite" shape".

Honchey--me? slow down? Some days I just happen to have more time in the clubhouse and seem to be very productive. It was nice to have one yesterday as the week before I didn't get much done at all!
