Love, love everyone's blocks. They just keep getting better and better.
Not sure what I'm posting, but here's some blocks for this week LOL:

JeanieG 10-29-2012 04:08 PM

Great blocks everyone. I finished one of the two! Jan, your quilting just gets more impressive all the time. How are you doing on your new toy??? Did you do these blocks on it?

janRN 10-29-2012 05:08 PM

Thanks, Jeanie. These I quilted on my Viking; I started the blocks on it and wanted to be consistent. They are so fun to quilt at this size. I've been playing a little with my Sweet 16--very humbling to see how much practice I need. I've got chronic bursitis in my left shoulder and this weather is making the pain so much worse than usual; I can't really do too much sewing on large items. Can't wait to play some more and maybe get a few wall hanging (UFO's) done.

JeanieG 10-29-2012 05:27 PM

Oh gosh, Jan, I know what you mean about the bursitis, I have had bought of that in the past! Right now my arthritis is my hands in acting up. My fingers are so stiff! It is a good thing I keep using them in quilting and typing, as I can imagine how much worse they would be if I did not exercise them in this way.

Are you getting any of that hurricane in your area? The damage is going to be astronomical I hear! Will be praying for all of you in harms way!

QuiltE 10-30-2012 03:27 AM

WOW! .... some beauties thru the storm!

Honchey ... hope the power stayed on and you've been able to use this as a pleasant distraction!

QNSue ... Good to see the telephone again this week. Your Virginia Star really frames up those horses well. The blues, kind of look like the storm brewing in the background.

CarrieM ... still love that Boudoir Phone! And oh my, that VS is perfectly contrasted and shows off so well!

MiraB ... another pair filled with *sighs*! Virginia is truly American patriotic with those roses surrounded with the stars. Have a FUN day with your DD. It's so nice that the two of you share your love of sewing.

JanRN ... A beautiful pair to brighten your way in the storm. The one on the left is so clean and crisp. The one on the right is stunning! Are you using a twin needle for your double rows of stitching? As for what ... what are the names of both blocks?

janRN 10-30-2012 04:46 AM

Thanks, QE, and good to hear from you. How was the storm in your area? Luckily, we have no damage but flooding is a given with all our hills and valleys. I'm on a hill thankfully but we do have some water in the basement; this has only happened twice before so you know we got tons of rain. DH keeps yelling at me to turn off the Weather Channel (I'm a WC junkie) but I'm amazed at the pics from the coast. Hope Anne is okay.

The blocks on the left is one from PC (Virginia I think) but the block on the right is from QuiltersCache called North Woods Cabin. It's one that turned out too small so I "framed" it to bring it up to size. I just quilt with a single needle then echo the lines.

QuiltE 10-30-2012 05:02 AM

Hi JanRN ... morning has broke and the wind is just gusts now. I don't think things were too bad here and I know I didn't get a deluge of rain. Though listening to the tube, I can see that some areas not far off (more south of me) had a lot of trees down and that there are 150,000 in the province without hydro. So all's good and I count my lucky blessings! Hope that Patches (and MrJanRN!!) have an easier day today. :) Great job on the frame up! I asked about the twin needle, as I was thinking the other day how that could be effective for quilting, so picked up on yours. Besides, would save time!! :D

Honchey ... I'm worried about you! :( I just saw that three towns in your state are flooded by 5 ft. Sure hope that is NOT you!

So Everyone ... please clarify for me ... if JanRN's left block is Virginia, then what is the star block? Whatever it is, it's a beautiful block!

QNSue...as usual, great stories to go with the blocks.
Carrie...I like the way your fabric choices gave the star an echoing affect. Very nice.
Mirabelle...Only a couple of more weeks of your beautiful roses. I've looked in my LQS and roses are hard to find!
JanR...I really like your sub block. I'll have to look it up. Like you I've been glued to the weather channel. The affects of Sandy will be felt for a very long time.
Quilte....JanR's block is Covered Wagon Crossing, not Virginia Star.
We've had very different wind patterns the past few days but no damage, rain or snow. Many of our leaves got blown away on Monday and we gathered up the rest of them yesterday with our mower. I now have most of my garden tucked in for the winter with a nice cover of leaf mulch.
I'm thinking of Honchey today as I post my pics.

QuiltE 10-31-2012 05:46 AM

**pictures GGal's garden tucked in for the winter .... with quilts!**

Thanks GGal for unconfusing me for the moment re block names!
What a perfect pair ... in thinking of Honchey, I see brightness in the background of your Covered Wagon background and some blue sky peeking thru in the Star. It really pulls out the blue, that's hiding in the background fabric. Lovely!!

Me too ... thinking of Honchey ... everytime I see more pics of NJ, I shed some tears for you Honchey!
My ♥ goes out to you!

dublb 10-31-2012 07:53 AM

Anne - We are all prayin' for ya.

janRN 10-31-2012 08:40 AM

Love your blocks, Ggal; that blue really pops. Thanks for sorting out the names of my block. I've made so many subs for the last 8-10 blocks I don't know what I made LOL!

Can I run an idea by yinz? All along I planned on making 2 quilts. Here's my plan: I'm going to make one 8 blocks by 8 blocks square. This fits on the top of the bed in the spare room (with dust ruffle around bottom); I'll add a 4" border all the way around. Instead of a solid border with cornerstones, I made a bunch of 4" PC blocks (I know, I'm anal) and I thought I'd put a few in the corners and space a few randomly in the borders. Does this sound weird? In my head it sounds okay but do you think it would be too busy? I'd have a `1" border between the regular quilt blocks and the 4" border. Hope I've explained this well enough. That's today's plan, may change; please let me know if you think this okay to have just a few 4" random blocks in the border. I really value all of your suggestions. Thanks!!

dublb 10-31-2012 08:48 AM

Oooo, I think it would be pretty. Maybe ya need ta draw it out & see how ya like it.

QuiltE 10-31-2012 08:53 AM

It makes sense to me JanRN ... However, I am getting a visionl of your 4" blocks on point amidst the border.

Maybe, oh just maybe, you could get OKSGlad to get her magic wand out and show you how it could look?
She's such a talented lady!! :D

gardnergal970 10-31-2012 12:26 PM

One thing to consider, blocks on point would be wider than 4 inches so the border would be wider but it would be very nice. Either way, Jan, it would be a very nice way to highlight the PC blocks.

mirabelle 10-31-2012 01:20 PM

Have just been catching up on the storm damage and I am amazed at the pictures coming out of the US. I hope Honchey is ok, my heart goes out to everyone who has been affected.

dublb 10-31-2012 03:56 PM

Has anyone heard from her a'tall??

Oh, Jeanie, I love both of your blocks. The ladybugs are cute but the contrast in the block is so pretty. Love the blue & yellow. Yellow gives such a nice accent.

*gasping for air*
Did JanRN just call yellow NICE?
*more gasps*
What is this world coming to?

JeanieG ... ITA ... your Ladybugs are stealing the show here, and the contrasts are perfect. And you did it again with the more subtle star. What a perfect print to use with the B+Y

Anael 11-01-2012 05:10 AM

Oh wow, such beautiful blocks! I hope everyone is alright! Did we hear from Honchey yet?

dublb 11-01-2012 10:19 AM

Such very cute blocks everyone! They just take my breath away!!!

mirabelle 11-01-2012 02:07 PM

JeanieG what beautiful blocks, love the ladybugs but I really really love your blue and yellow, what a great combination.
Have you seen the requirements for Bonnie's new mystery??? the only colour I would have enough of is the purples, lime green and aqua just aren't in my stash, I looked and I don't have one piece of grey or black on white. I know I could do it in another colour way but that is where I am stumped, cause if I can't see where the colours go and how they play together I find it difficult to imagine. I will download the instructions and think about it. I really need to get a move on with Jamestown.

JeanieG 11-01-2012 03:06 PM

Yes, I am doing Bonnie's new mystery "Easy Street". I've downloaded the fabric requirements and have all the colors except (like you) the gray and black on white. There is plenty of time to acquire them. I also picked up the color chips from Lowe's that she talked about. That helped a lot with the colors I had pulled at home. Some were off from what the chips showed, so I pulled them out of the stacks and put them away. I actually went into a fabric store today, and man did those color chips help! I picked up a couple more purples. They did not have a gray, or black on white that I like the "price" of! They were all $10 or more a yard! I don't think so!!! JoAnn's is having a 25% off everything sale this weekend, so I plan to go there. If anyone is interested in the Mystery Quilt, here is a link to Bonnie's Blog. Click on the tab that says "Easy Street", and at the bottom there is a link to her blog (Intro to Easy Street) that has the fabric requirements for the Mystery.

mirabelle 11-02-2012 04:31 AM

JeanieG I have just finished going through my stash (piece by piece) and I found 3 pieces of "lime" green, 2 pieces that could pass for aqua and a small 6 inch square of black on white, do you think I have enough:D

gardnergal970 11-02-2012 05:40 AM

Jeanie...I also like your blocks. I do have a question about Bonnie Hunter's Easy Street for you and Mirabelle...it seems like a lot of yardage for the size of the quilt....a little over 14 yards! Does she suggest so much yardage for each color so that there is a variety of prints in each color? I understand a variety in each color is nice but how many would you suggest? I don't have any of these colors in my stash so will have to shop if I do this but don't really want to get a lot more than I really need. I really don't need another project but I do love the colors she has chosen!

carriem 11-02-2012 05:50 AM

Ggal and Jeanie--I like all of your blocks!

Because it is a scrappy quilt, you can pick up more at any time, they don't have to match what you have, the more the better, they say. I have about 5 different prints of each color right now. I do not have my gray or black on white prints yet.

mirabelle 11-02-2012 02:08 PM

Ggal970I managed to view Bonnie on Quiltcam yesterday and she answered your question regarding yardage. She said that if you use approximately 9 yards for the backing of a quilt you will need about 12 to 14 yards for the front allowing for all those seam allowances. She also said that she used about 60 (yes I nearly fell off the chair) different greens and the fabrics she showed on her blog was only a small selection of the colours she used. Another viewer asked about changing the colour scheme and Bonnie said that if you have 3 colourways that place nice together it would work, I think the quilter was thinking of blue, yellows and burgundy, then the grey as the constant. I was wondering if you could just use a selection of creams for the background as I have plenty of them.

I am still sitting on the fence and wondering if I REALLY need to start another quilt, I have more than enough to keep me occupied for the next 12 months (or longer):D

Honchey 11-05-2012 05:12 PM

Hi Everyone, I am online again...I can't really complain with all the suffering and loss all around my state...I had water, propane stove and the fireplace/woodstove so we were warm enough and had plenty of food...I think I did more cooking than usual...Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts....Our home is surrounded on three sides with very tall oaks and only a few branches came down...we did have the canopies thinned out several years ago... I think that helped...Now to delete all the emails.... Will check in later...Anne

mirabelle 11-06-2012 03:58 PM

Nice to have you back Honchey, we were all very worried for everyone in the path of the storm.

Oh my I missed these postings, too! The blocks are all well ahhhhh. Did a little magic wanding on EQ. Is this what you were thinking?

janRN 11-09-2012 06:15 PM

Yes, yes, yes! I love the look of those, OK. You are too clever for words when it comes to EQ7-thank you. The only thing I'll do differently is put 4 or 5 blocks in two corners and 3 or 4 blocks in the opposite corners; sort of unbalanced if you know what I mean. Those pics make me more confident in my choice of adding small blocks; I was afraid it would look too busy. I got the idea because I don't think I have enough fabric for solid borders but now I'm glad I don't. Thank you!!!

Oh I love that idea. When the small blocks are evenly spaced like in the second pic it looks so stiff. I wish I were more clever with EQ--don't know how to space those little squares off center. If I were you, I'd put 1 to 1 1/2 inch sashes between the border blocks to help define them.

QuiltE 11-14-2012 06:05 PM

WOW OKSGlad ... those EQs look great!
Are those all your blocks ... can't wait to see how you put yours together!

While it would change your border widths, have you thought about putting the smaller blocks on-point JanRN? I think that would take away from the stiffness that OKSGlad mentioned. I do like your idea about putting groups of the blocks on the corners! I like borders that are not just strips of fabric!

janRN 11-15-2012 05:44 AM

QE, tried it both ways: mini-blocks on point and straight. For some reason they look better straight. I'm just going to use small sashing between them, maybe only 1/2" wide; the 1" wide seemed too large. Will decide when and if I get that far. Besides working extra, I'm finishing up cleaning my mother's house and hope to have it on the market in the next week or two. Not a good time of year to try to sell a house.

Yes, 1/2" will probably be better than 1" being that the blocks are smaller.

Good to know you are almost ready to put the house on the market.
Let's hope someone wants a new Home Sweet Home for Christmas ... and give you a quick sale! :)
