Here comes a flying cloud...of dust tunneling up to the sky...and friendship star, a pigtailed girl...I was one once upon a time long ago until I reached third grade. Then Grandma cut my hair and gave me my first perm. And you are welcome, Ansel. Sharing what I have been blessed with always gives me happiness.

Somehow the box of Pony Quilt fabric just keeps growing. Just maybe I need to stay out of quilt shops and nothing would call my name...

QuiltE, have you checked your email lately??

Great blocks Anael and QNS. QNS i love how you have a story to go with your blocks, you should write a journal to go with this quilt.
Here are mine for this week

Anael ... nice and crisp on the contrasts! I bet I can guess where that fabric came from!! :)

QNSue ... As always, originality beyond us all. Like that dust storm, naturally created? or from those horses stirring up the dirt? Great contrasts and points on the Star ... familiar centre!! :) Will check the email!

MiraB ... YOur stripes really work well in that star! And as always both are just beautiful!

And now for mine ... Some angry storm clouds, with some sunny breaks. Then some friends playing together with their ponies!

Oh Mirabelle - that Friendship Star is so awesome. I don't know how you did it, but that striped fabric just matches up beautifully. I would not have even attempted doing that! Wonderful blocks Mirabelle, as usual!

Great looking blocks QuiltE! I had some trouble getting all those squares in Flying Cloud going the correct way. Thought it would be a breeze, but wasn't! Here are my blocks for this week!

QuiltE 05-08-2012 07:07 PM

JeanieG ... I know what you mean! Even with PPing, I kept checking and double checking to make sure I had things lined up right. You'd think that with so few fabrics it'd be simpler. Or did we just make it difficult? Refreshing breeze from those flying clouds, blowing over the matching incredibly FC horses! Love how all those greens come together ... they look ever so refreshing with a sun beam coming down on them.

But now that I look at again after it is posted, the "star" does not show up at all! I probably should have reversed the two greens....darn!!!

It shows ... just that it's more subtle. And that's OK too!
I like how the dark pops though. I do things like that, and then after say, oh it would have been better this way. That's one joy about these samplers .... if we aren't happy, we can live with it. Whereas, if it was a quilt all of the same blocks ... we'd be disappointed or would be doing it all over.

We quilt and we learn!!! :)

mirabelle 05-08-2012 11:29 PM

JeanieG there were 60 pieces in Flying Cloud, I also had to keep checking to make sure they were going the right way:o

janRN 05-09-2012 04:39 AM

My favorite morning of the week and you never disappoint!!!

Anael-wow! those points are perfect! I love how your block is like a "fashion show" of western wear.

QNS-always love your stories. Great fussy cutting in Clouds and I love all the stars in Star block.

Mirab-oh, your blocks are so pretty (love the grey in the first block); and those perfect stripes!

QE-still loving your yellow, esp with the light blue and those fc cowboys are too cute!

Jeanie-very pretty blue and white (know what you mean about those little squares); I love the green you used in your star block. It looks like a peaceful pasture scene.

I agree with JanRN. Wednesday morning coffee is such a treat with all the beautiful blocks to view.

Aneal...A really neat block. I love the blue cowboy fabric.

Mirabelle...I look forward to your roses every week and you never disappoint. The FS looks so different with the stripes. Really a nice treatment.

QNS...you really put a lot into your blocks with your creativity. I can see the dust storm coming. I also had braids for a time but the morning braiding was such a trial for my Mom since I cried with the pulling to make it tight for the day that she cut it off into a bob.

JeanieG...your FS is amazing. I didn't even notice there were two greens until it was mentioned but I really like how it turned out.

QuiltE...Cute kiddos in the corners of the FS and your yellow works well in the FC. Very nice.

I didn't make notes so I hope I didn't forget anyone. Here are mine for the week. I used templates and had the legs of the FC reversed before I realized it but that's just the way the cookie crumbles!

QuiltE 05-09-2012 07:01 AM

OMG GGal ... both of those just sparkle and dazzle! And both I could see as full quilts, especially your Friendship Star. Outstanding piecework on your part! :)

QuiltingNinaSue 05-09-2012 08:14 AM

Love all the 'eye' candy; Ansel, perfect blocks and perfect colors. Mirabelle, another set of beautiful rose blocks. QuiltE : perfect checkerboard against that dark starry sky. Jan RN, I love your colors and the look of your star...unique and very lovely. Like a Kentucky bluegrass scene. And GGal, love your colors you put together that makes it so unique and lovely with so perfect piecing.

I backed off of so much piecing around the block and cut a solid strip for sides, top and bottom. Did the same with a another block with four small pieces in the center for no reason...made it as one block. The white "ghost" horses and dark "nightmare" are raising dust in the clouds of the sky...surely, you have heard of the those 'riders in the sky'...and 'hillbilly heaven'.

KISS to me is not 'kissing action' but the old saying of "Keep It Simple, Stupid!" Gotta teach that to grandson, too. The little guy is turning four this month; last March, he counted to 20, and ID'd all the colors of Uno and played the game too well for his age.

carriem 05-09-2012 08:27 AM

Some more great blocks! Taking a break from cleaning and packing...emails, then lunch, then start loading up...

Ggal great blocks--I love the fabric in Friendship Star.

Here are mine. Paper piecing, fussy cutting, and Y-seams (oh my!). Six months ago I'd have passed by these blocks. Yinz have all encouraged me and taught me to do all these things. Ok, so I cheated and re-drafted Friendship Star to avoid the y-seams.

oksewglad 05-09-2012 04:43 PM

Oh you guys, your colors are all stupendous and the stitching spot on.
Anael--the white sets the block off well and I can imagine it nestled in between all your others
QNS--you put us all to shame with your block interpretation. "Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind" Pony tails, never had them until I was a teenager; then just pulled it back. So much easier that way.
mirabelle- Ah even without your signature FC spray of roses these never cease to amaze.
QE-a striking contrast in the cloud block. "Giddy up, wet's go" the kiddies call as they pass through the house on their ponies. Cute, cute.
Jeanie-what I saw first was the FC horses, standing still so perfectly. To heck with the star--again fabric selection changing the look of the block. Soft blues will be a restful block in your quilt(s).
GGal-- striking lime green sets the block off. The wavy blue oak leaves create such movement in your block--nice job!
Jan--the bright blue and start white make for vibrant checkerboard. At the same time the subtle background makes the stars shine.
You've all got me wanting to head to the sewing room--shucks no can do.

deranged_damsel 05-09-2012 06:44 PM

Wowie!!! beautiful blocks everyone :D

QNS your block made me giggle! earlier today I found myself hollerin at a dust devil to stay the heck away from my laundry line :D

sorry I havent taken pictures yet, soon I promise.

mirabelle 05-10-2012 03:17 AM

Thanks everyone, I love to see everyones blocks each week, how different they all look, great work, yes we are all getting better at these darn Y seams, and more to come

gardnergal970 05-10-2012 04:28 AM

JanRN...you have mastered all those things you would have avoided 6 months ago. Really well done, beautiful blocks.
QNSue...I've modified where I can have fewer seams too. With the FC, I liked the checkered look but I did it by sewing strips of the alternating colors together, pressing well and cutting into the correct width.

Thanks all for your kind comments. You are all so very encouraging

JanRN ... you nailed those perfectly! Everything about them ... colours, contrasts, FC, PP!! How brilliant with your star fabric within the FStar as it really makes it sparkle forth.

Termi 05-12-2012 07:02 AM

What beautiful blocks all.

anael, what great cowboy fabric. Nice job of FC.

QuiltingNinaSue, again your creativity shines. Flying clouds looks amazing! Love all the different fabrics in FS, especially the girl with pigtails. Great job on both!

mirabelle, oh such beautiful blocks and such nice work!

QuiltE, your FC makes me feel like I'm up in the sky. FS is just so cute! Great job on both. Love the blue sashing.

JeanieG, very pretty shades of blue you used in FC. I really like your FS. I can still see the star AND the block looks so different. Amazing how that happens. Nice job on both!

Gardnergal970, your FS reminds me of a beautiful field of wild flowers. FC looks just great, very pretty. I too had to keep my eye on which fabric went where.

JanRN, love the blue and white you used in FC, one of my favorite color combos, and great fussy cutting. The stars really are beaming in FS. Great job on both. I don't blame you about those dang Y seams.

My flying clouds is done and hope to have friendship star done today. Will post then.

DD love your blue colors.

Thanks Termi, for your kind words.

QuiltE 05-12-2012 10:11 AM

DDamsel ... another great pair!! Well done on the check within the tiny blocks. The beige in the FS print adds nicely to the mix and oh how that navy/white barbed wire pops the star out!

Termi ... they were fun to do. I'll be looking forward to seeing your pair when you are ready!

JeanieG 05-12-2012 10:36 AM

Deranged Damsel - those blocks turned out beautiful. Especially like the dark blue in FS, wish my "star" had stood out in mine!

deranged_damsel, wow, beautiful blocks, nice job!

ok, I'm ready to leave these two blocks behind and go on to the next two.

QuiltE 05-12-2012 12:49 PM

Nicely done Termi!! ... Corners look all pointy and squared.
And look at those Lil Cowpokes and Indians a'singing and a'playin' along! :) A fun fabric for sure!!! :)

janRN 05-12-2012 01:55 PM

DD, pretty pretty blocks! Love the blue and white. This city girl didn't know that was barbed wire--I just thought it was pretty stripes. Love how you used it in your block.

Termi, Flying Clouds has such a nice soft look. I love those little cowboys, great fussy cutting.

Everyone has really done such a great job on these blocks and I didn't think Flying Clouds was easy. We all deserve a pat on the back, she says modestly! Thank you all for your compliments and encouragement.

QuiltE 05-12-2012 02:06 PM

along with a whole bunch of "attagirls"
:D

deranged_damsel 05-12-2012 03:05 PM

Termi that friendship star is SUPER CUTE :D

JeanieG 05-12-2012 04:06 PM

Termi, you just did a great job on this weeks blocks. Love those cute cowboys and indians!

oksewglad 05-12-2012 09:02 PM

termi and DDamsel your blocks show how varied quilt making can be. Both sets of blocks beautiful in their own rights. termi the scale of the cute kiddies fit the corner squares perfectly. DD the barbed wire has become your signature fabric. Great job, you two.

I'm in the heart of race horse country. Blue grass pastures, both black and white board fences, horses grazing knee deep in blue grass. A lovely sight for sure.

gardnergal970 05-13-2012 05:00 AM

DDamsel...so brave of you to use plaids for those little squares and you did them so well! Great work.

Termi...Piecing to perfection and no wavy edges. At first glance I thought they were QuiltE's because of the color. Love how the yellow and blue work together and your little guys just add to the fun in the other block. Love both of them.

How about some photos to include in your PC? ... I know it's a little off from the overall look of your quilt ... though they would be company for your folk-art cow!

oksewglad, that does sound like a beautiful picture. I love the look of miles of white board fences and grass and horses. I always wanted to go to Kentucky to see the Derby and be one of those women in the stands dressed really fancy and with a big hat. Sipping a mint julep of course.

mirabelle 05-13-2012 10:08 PM

Beautiful blocks everyone, just so different yet the same pattern.
