Hi, There is now much discussion about block placement and sashing so I think a thread about it is necessary. We do want to keep the threads separate so as not to confuse anyone. Photos relating to this should be posted here and not the other photo page. Let's try to keep subjects where they belong.

First let me say I have only done two quilt tops "on point" but I learned my lesson after the first one. When you cut the large triangles for all the sides PLEASE STARCH your fabric and cut them larger than required by at least a 1/2"... this way when you sew the rows together you won't lose your points and you should have enough room to square up the quilt without sacrificing the triangles.

I have 7 blocks to finish up so will be watching this page with interest-- used mostly Kansas Troubles and just bought dk brown sashing, and gold for the cornerstones- what a job it is going to be placing the blocks- scarey! thanks Honchey for all the info.

What a timely page. i have jus finished the blocks for an appliqued Floral Alphabet quilt. I've chosen the sashing but I'm trying to decide whether to slightly Shadow box each block before I sash it. opinions?

Great idea - I kind of hesitated to put my pic of my sashing choice in the blocks pages last week, as there was no ohter place to do that as we have started discussing this part of the process a lot lately...

I spent last weekend adding my sashing to the 1st 68 blocks I had completed, and making the in between diagonal sashing strips following the suggested layout in the book for the queen size quilt. So far don't see that I'm going to want to change much around, seems to be working colorwise. It's kind of fun to have this framework up on the design wall to put each of the new blocks into & see the added dimensions as it all comes together.

Sorry can't get a full picture, but right now my Lizzie is set up in front of the design wall...

Auntjo thank you! Looking at your pic makes sense to me now. I'm sorry I'm the dumb one that was asking all the questions about sashing but Jeannie explained it well and now seeing it like that makes sense!! Please blame my questions on senior, blonde moments and thank you. I can't wait to see some more pic. Ordered my sashing fabric today and can't wait for it to get here. Finally decided on dark tourquoise (I think LOL).

I've taken a couple of photos of what I was trying to explain about the side triangles--mind you that there's no sashing attached to these blocks but you can see the overlapping of the triangles where the points are needed after sewing. I made the triangles larger than necessary just to show you. Anne

Great tip. I'm trying to make a lap quilt, but between my DGD's quilt, my guild's Round Robin and the QG's Row Robin, it seems to be a losing battle. But as soon as I can, I'll add my sashing, cornerstones and side triangles and post the 50 I've finished. Thanks. Belles

Thanks, Anne-pics help so much and your explanation is very clear. I would have cut mine the size suggested so now I'll follow your lead and cut larger and starch.
