HAPPY NEW YEAR Everyone!! :D

Here is a picture of Whirling Star 2 block, that I have made for this month. I chose to paper piece my block together, but you can use a few different ways to make your block. It was such fun to make & I hope you enjoy making your's & joining all of us for 2013.

Wow you both made beautiful blocks! This really looks like a learning curve! Thanks for showing :D

Surfergirl 01-01-2013 03:47 AM

Both blocks are beautiful! Hopefully, I can get caught up on my BOM's and keep up with this one. Happy New Year!

WOW! Everyone's blocks are so beautiful!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 01-01-2013 06:26 AM

It does look hard, but then again, that's the point. Learn some new skills. I really like how different the blocks look in different fabrics.

mimiknoxtaylor 01-01-2013 07:02 AM

Y'all are too fast! I just found the thread! Great looking blocks. I have a little more sewing to finish my #4 Dec 2012 block & then I can pull out fabrics for this block. This year it's only going to be 1 block a month!

zennia 01-01-2013 07:23 AM

So glad I decided to do this years BOM. I love your blocks. This is going to be fun and a new learning experience for me.

Jeanine 01-01-2013 09:55 AM

Wow, You all are so quick! These blocks look wonderful: precision sewing, great colors. What a wonderful way to begin your New Year.

Jenniky 01-01-2013 10:01 AM

Wow beautiful blocks.. and Happy New year to you all. :) Looking forward to another fun block of the month year and I love the theme.. I have always liked being part of a I CAN DO CREW

I think you are may be thinking about the Quilt Along for 2013 there are 2 blocks for that one an easier one and a more challenging one. I know I am getting a little confused as I want to do all of them :)

jaba 01-01-2013 11:29 AM

I am, geezs thanks for jogging my memory! I guess my "new year" hasn't quite started yet. I better say a couple more prayers and ask for the mind to please be a little sharper. Thanks for helping me along....

ameriguat 01-01-2013 12:28 PM

if you make the block four times and play with the arrangement of the four quadrants you can make four different blocks. if you play with the arrangements of the triangular sections of the quadrants you can make even more different blocks.

here are some examples.

Elisabrat 01-01-2013 02:43 PM

Well Patrice show off.. had a bit of time on your hands? try it this way.. try it that way.. try it.. love it and wow if you could perfect it then it would be very easy to whip out a bunch of them in the same fabric different item each time what a quilt that would be no one would ever guess. and that would be the idea :)

frustratedquilter40 01-01-2013 03:01 PM

PatriceJ love it so cool all the different ways this block could go together. Love your color/fabricchoices!

patricej 01-01-2013 03:32 PM

thanks. i do plan to use them in a quilt. also, i wanted to have enough practice to be able to answer questions for anybody who tried the traditional piecing with Y-seams. soooo ... i made twelve of them.

not today. i had the advantage of knowing ahead of time which block SulaBug had chosen. that gave me time to play and prepare.

Wow, Sula, you brought the heat on this one! This was a huge challenge for me. I should have labeled my colors, (whoops) because the lavender was supposed to be the other "spokes" of the whirl.

I am a novice, novice quilter. This single block took me a good part of the afternoon. I almost didn't post this block, because I'm not happy about all the mistakes, but the whole point is to get better, right?

Hopefully we'll get a lot more blocks posted.. love seeing the colors you guys pick out.

Andii 01-01-2013 04:06 PM

Beautiful blocks, everyone. I'm glad you posted yours, frenchfryqueen, your colors are my favorite ones so far. I'm going to have to think about this one for a bit.:)

This was a challenging block for me but it did end up at exactly 12 ½" which is a miracle in itself. I mistakenly chose to use only three colours (hope this isn't the way my whole year will head) and so the finished design looks a little lop sided, but I will keep him for my January block anyway. Thanks sulabug & patricej, and thanks to other members who have also posted their blocks.

I finished my block today. It was I think the hardest one I'd ever done because the set-in seams was a new experience. I had given up on a block once due to set-in seams, and now I might be able to go back and actually complete it!

UGH, This took me forever! And I had to rip it out 4 times because it didn't look right. I think the pulling, stretched out the fabric, so I'll have to do this again, but at least I'm a pro now! :)

I had an "ooops Moment"

rather than ripping it out and doing that corner again,
I just redid it

I will save that corner for a new project, or to fill a spot in one that needs it!

I love this BOM, thanks Brat for telling me about it! Now I have oner more block to use in the boom swaps!

marytoddliz 01-01-2013 08:15 PM

The quality of my picture is not very good! I have two calico's and a solid with a geometric design, new Camera! I love the blocks that are being posted, really a very different variety of blocks made.

Patrice, I love how you can just change them up and get different blocks, what a fun quilt that one will be!

Elisabrat 01-01-2013 08:29 PM

beautiful blocks I love the colors being chosen!

patricej 01-02-2013 12:15 AM

i didn't throw this block together in a few minutes.
it took several hours, and i have been making quilts for about 15 years.
i checked my work at each step. if a seam wasn't straight, or if it wasn't the correct width, i picked it out and re-sewed it.
i also pressed as i went. that's a lot of trips to the ironing board, but checking each seam and pressing once i knew it was correct helped set me up for success on the next seam.

don't forget ... we are challenging ourselves to work on blocks we'd normally look at with fear and trepidation.
slow and steady; expect to make mistakes. just be willing to fix them. that's how we learn. (well ... that's usually the way I learn, anyway. LOL)

Here is mine. I looked around my sewing room to decide what color scheme I was going to use and found some civil war fabric I have been wanting to use in a project. So my squares are going to be scrappy civil war....I don't know if civil war is suppose to be scrappy but is going to be in my quilt!

not sure I am in love with these colors...may change...

patricej 01-02-2013 07:31 AM

i'm sure many quilters had only scraps to work with during the civil war era.
your color placement is fascinating.
it creates yet another version of that block.

jaba 01-02-2013 07:42 AM

I haven't even started yet! Working on batik blocks for the block exchange. I have some lavender's and teals that I have been saving for a quilt so think I will go with those. Hopefully today....those set in seams are making me shudder already and paper pieced I always have the angle wrong some way and end up with not enough fabric to cover the strip. Patience patience....I need to take some VERY deep breaths. Wish me luck, I'm going to need all I can find.

I am glad this one is done. I have done many many PP'd blocks. This one gave me fits when trying to place the fabrics. AARRGGG.

rwquilts 01-02-2013 09:17 AM

I am home from vacation and have just printed off the PP patterns...I am heading to my sewing room to make some magic! :) I am loving seeing what ya'all are posting...allows me to look and see what I might want to do with my fabrics. Thanks Patrice for the tutes regarding sewing this block! Awesome!

Anael 01-02-2013 10:29 AM

So many finishers already and it's only January 2nd! All blocks are lovely!

Well you've successfully made this block with 3 colours & it doesn't look lopsided like mine does, good job!

PokerDiva 01-02-2013 01:19 PM

Yours doesn't look lopsided to me. We are our own worse critics.

Well after I figured out that the foundations were a different size for 4 of the spokes I unpicked those teensy stitches & replaced 4 of them with a different fabric and am much happier with it now.

Sulabug I love your pretty colors, and the pattern. I need to go shopping....
