I've been looking at that since I got the magazine but haven't quite figured out whether I'll jump in or not. Your enthusiasm has me leaning toward YES.

I have no idea how I missed that article! Thanks for posting it on here, I've got 3 new quilting magazine's as part of Christmas presents that I haven't even had a chance to read yet. I'm doing the Border Creek mystery quilt, and starting a new one at our LQS next month but that is a BOM quilt, and if you go to Craftsy website they've got a free BOM that you can do at no charge for the instructions if you can't find it I will try and post a link to it.

It looks like it will be a fun one.. one draw back to my original post.. The use of the two products wont work for this quilt. I did a test square just to confirm the measurements of the squares, and unfortunately, both of the products do not go up to the size of square we will be using. :( Sad really, I was looking forward to 'power sewing' the triangles, but these are large enough that I dont believe anyone will have any issues. My suggestion is to sew, cut and press all of the triangles, sit in front of the tv, do the matching and then run them all through the machine at the same time.


Hey Sharon, look on page 42, under the "Making of the pieced squares". It say Make 100 [64] total and under diagram II it says make 40 [24] the numbers don't add up. Whats your take on these numbers?

I really, really do. It's been sitting open on my work table since I got it. I've even gone through my stash to find fabrics, but haven't found quite what I want yet.

I'm looking forward to everyone posting pics of their progress.

That's the way I look at it also. They always seam to do something that I am not good at or very weak at, so in that respect, Mystery quilts are a good thing! (as if they were ever a bad thing.. just sayin')

I just figured it out. They are giving you the option of two sizes of quilt, hens the two numbers.. DHU! Good thing we have lots of time to make this one LOL

What size is everyone making ? I am leaning towards the smaller one - since there are so many triangles , etc...

I saw that on another article in a different magazine the larger number 100 is for a standard sized quilt and the smaller number in the brackets is if your making a lap quilt

I just started the Craftsy BOM, and I really like both the directions and the quilting squares. At the end, they will all come together as a lap quilt, with directions on both binding and quilting it. The first two blocks have been a lot of fun, and you learn new piecing techniques with each set of blocks. The course itself is FREE, as in no money at all, although you can buy the fat quarters used for around $80. I'm not buying the fat quarters. I'm just dipping into my stash for what I need, and that's been a whole lot of fun - sort of matching the patterns and colors in the fabrics, keeping track of the fabrics so they all come together as a whole in the end. "Playing in my stash" as I call it, and that's been fun. I have more than enough fabrics to pull from my stash. It'd be silly of me to buy more fabric, and besides, I'll be using fabrics I bought because I loved them. I looked over the fat quarters they're using, and don't care for them as well. And they do encourage you to use your own stash! They'd love to see photos of completed quilts at the end, especially of quilts done from a stash. So check it out! You can have fun, have a free tutorial, end up with a lap quilt, and reduce your stash all at the same time! Once I'm done with this, I'm going to try a Mystery Quilt, which also sound like fun!

Ok, pulled fabrics according to the directions. I thought it would be easy, but boy the 2nd fabric that requires 3 1/8 yards kicked my bu.. um rear! Here is my test picture to see if they all work together, tell me what you think.

Ok I think I'm in...I've never done triangles so this coud be bad. I'll have to buy fabric, but may wait a little cause I joined two bom's here and havent started those either....:)

The salvage says Karen Neuburger www.quiltingtreasures .com I bought it at a store that was going out of business in Prescott AZ a couple of years ago. It called to me and said 'take me home take me homeeeee" LOL

I just went to the connecting threads web site and found that they have lots of fabrics that are 'reasonable' price, not the 10 or 11 dollars a yard that the quilt shops are now charging (which IMHO, is ridiculous!) So that might be a good place for you to start looking if you need to purchase fabric for this project.

The instructions are for 2 different sized finished projects. The pieces may be used in different final settings to achieve the finished sized required. Just choose your size and go for it. Another way to do a lot of HST is to take a strip of both fabrics, half the width of the fabric and the width of the block you need for the finished HST. Press them good sides together. On the back of one, mark the blocks, mark the diagonal line in a zigzag pattern, then sew up one side and down the other. Set seams, cut blocks apart and then cut the HST. (If you plan to square down, use a little bigger square, I use Eleanor Burns SquareUp Ruler, before I press open.) Press open. And you will have done six at a time. This is like making your own Triangle papers for any size HST you are making.

Looks neat. Gonna' give it a try. I want to make a memory quilt for a friend who recently lost her husband, using his flannel shirts. I think either block done in alternating reverse color blocks would work. Hmmmm, have to figure this one out. There's my January project. Can't wait the year for all but I think either of these would work.

Ok I think your fabrics all go good togeather, I'm also gona do the mystery & have my fabrics pulled from my stash, my friend is doing it with me & we are doing the small size.

This "mystery quilt" sounds interesting!! What is it all about?? (Sorry..I'm new..lol!) :)

Would someone please explain Thangles to me. What are they and how do you use them? I've seen them everywhere, but never learned what to do with them.

Karen - I have bought the packages but have yet to try them , maybe someone here can help us with this :) I would love to be able to use them

Jmncolts- this is a mystery quilt in a magazine McCalls quilting - this month had the fabric requirements and first step , we are doing it here to keep each other motivated and help with any problems :)

As a group project- on New Years Day we did a Mystery quilt here from Planet Patchwork and had a blast

i havent found a mystery quilt project for superbowl sunday yet. both merry mayhem and planet patchwork both said they were not having one.

We could make our own ???? OR just meet up and have a sew in day , we all work on whatever and chat as we go along :) Share our progress - OR we find a previous one on line and see if the author will let us do it here , with Patrices' approval of course

Good ideas Sharon. I like the first one the best, with beginning and ending pictures and chat in between. It could be our own Super Bowl of progress.

i'm glad i found you, too! i gave the fabric to my husband to show my intention to make him a quilt and had this mystery quilt in mind! nice to have company! i haven't cut it yet. i'll probably be running a little behind you as my old sewing machine just fizzled on me so i'll be using my fw till i can either get a new machine (fingers crossed) or get my workhorse fixed. meanwhile, i have projects with deadlines to meet! don't want to disappoint any one! glad to have buddies to play with!! 8-)

Fabric is cut for the squares and will get them marked on my down time at work tomorrow. Nice we have the time to do this one, life is getting busy around here!

what fabrics did you chose? i still need to find a copy of the magazine. does the beginning instructions sound like this will be a traditional pattern?

I really want to do this with you all. I will look in my stash and see what I can come up with, I have the magazine and pulled it to look at again after this thread was posted. Would love to see the fabrics you all are using.
