Qb block of the month - may 2013 - tenth star
Here's what you all have been waiting for: the next block :)
It's called Tenth Star and you can find it here: http://quilterscache.com/V/VOS_TenthStarBlock.html It's really not as hard as it looks! I didn't know what I got myself into when I picked this one but I made the block and it's really quite easy. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Good luck all :) |
I just know that everyone is going to love this block pattern, when it's all made up!! Thank you for picking such a lovely block.
:D :D :D :D |
oh wow! I think I am going to go sleep on it! very pretty block! I am just trying to wrap my mind around it in my color scheme! Happy May Day ladies!
|
Liking it!
|
I am also liking this block a lot. One question though about printing the paper piecing template. It is a GIF file and the test square prints at 1.5 inches. How do I save the image as a PDF? I am using Windows 7. If all else fails I guess I could recreate the template to achieve the correct size.
|
I'm using Windows 7 also and Google Chrome. I don't remember having problems with the measurements. I don't know how to save a GIF file as PDF, I guess you'll have to convert it yourself. Did you try and alter the printer settings? Like printing on 75% and see if it prints the test square at 1" ?

Thanks Anael. I will try your suggestion. If all else fails I will go to my old PC and print it. I guess it helps to have the old one still available, LOL

Figured it out. Saved it to MS Word, then saved it as a PDF. In order to print it with the correct 1 inch test square I had to go to custom scaling and increase the scaling to 110%. Whooo Hoooo!
Caroline, I use Chrome and there is a plug in that allows me to select Print then change from my printer to PDF. This is the greatest thing when I want to save instructions online too! Hugs, Cajun |

I have to look for that plug in also! Thanks CajunBear!
Caroline, I'm glad you figured it out :) |
I found it! Choose 'print' on the right of the screen, when you have the screen for printing the document change destination to 'save as PDF' and voilą :)

I can't get Quilter's Cache to load this morning (May 1). Is anyone else having difficulty?
|
I have adjust the Paper-Piecing gif file to a jpeg sized correctly. I don't know why they say your graphics are being changed....mine always print perfectly to her patterns... at any rate I decided instead of redrawing to work on adjusting and saving the gif file to jpeg..so if you want it....just email me directly at so I can send it to you.
Hugs, Cajun PS Not happy wasting my PP Carol Doak paper on trials. |
I did not start Mays block yet but I did manage to get myself caught up - February gave me fits but its done if poorly lol. My oldest is coming up for a visit this weekend so will try my hand at this one next week. Have never done paper piecing so will let you know how that goes. Hope you all have a great weekend! Well I have tried like 6 times to upload a photo but its not working - will show you my blocks at a later date :)
|
It's a pretty block, I'm trying to decide how to arrange my colors. I print out greyscale and use crayons that match my fabric to figure it out. I color in the portions.
I tried printing the PP templates from the site and from a file someone sent but they print out a bit larger than an inch. Usually there is an option in my printer preferences for "actual size" or "no scaling", but there is not this time. Does anyone have any idea why? |
I made that block without the PP for a BOM and it came out wonderful....I may try this one with the PP and see how it comes out.

Have a wonderful day. Judy in Phx, AZ |
That's beautiful Judy!
|
I am behind this month...hope to do mine Friday! It is a really pretty block...
|
Judy, love your block, reminded me of Red Hat Ladies! I've tried multiple times to make my pics smaller & you can't even see the pattern so I gave up. God is in control here at my house, but sadly my computer controls the camera downloads. August tune-up I'll ask the IT guy to fix it.
|
I use PIXresizer (free download) for resizing. Easy to use and works great!

Difergie, that's going to be a wonderful quilt! It doesn't need to be perfect to be pretty :) You did a great job!

Think I'm finally caught up from being gone on vacation for 3 weeks. At least sort of with the sewing part, haven't started the house cleaning yet. Here's my block, just can't seem to get the hang of the paper piecing, need private lessons I think.

yikes, I am behind for May's BOM too... I haven't even attempted to download or print it yet. Maybe I'll try to squeeze it in this weekend. Everyone's blocks look wonderful.
|
Jaba, your block looks great! There are lots of tuts on the internet on paper piecing, did you have a look already?
I always print the design 5 times, one I use as templates so I don't waist a lot of fabric. |
Thanks Anael. I have looked and tried and tried. Maybe the template idea would work....seems like I sew the piece on and then when I flip it over it's always to short or cut off somewhere. Just frustrating to me, seems like a lot of wasted fabric

You're welcome jaba and Caroline. When I started pp I had a hard time too, it's like mirror thinking. Sometimes I still get it wrong. With the templates you have to keep in mind which side of the fabric should be up otherwise you'll end up with a piece you can't use. With lots of pieces I make a list and write down how many pieces and how to cut them (reversed or not)
