This week we are using HSTs

So as usual it uses my cut down method which I think makes your blocks more accurate and you have better control of the size as you go. Just make sure to measure each time you complete a step. It will save a lot of frustration when you are done.


Here are the directions to making the HSTs

To make this quilt block into a 12 1/2" unfinished size you will need a 2 1/2" template. You can take a look at the layout picture to see what Blocks you need and where to put the colors. If you change the color arrangement you will get a differant look from mine.

So try it out and see what you can make with this design! Have fun!

Thinking ahead, this would make a great halloween table runner with three of the blocks and outside border of halloween fabric.....ooooo ;0

This would be the right block for the black and orange quilt that I will need to make for my nephews graduation quilt. His school colors are black and orange.

Rhonda, how do you decide what colors and prints to use in your blocks. I have the hardest time deciding on which colors to use together.

That's why I love my EQ. I can audition a number of colors in a short time. Even if it isn't actual fabric I have on hand it gives me a chance to play with color and see what I like and what I don't like. I have learned alot about pairing fabrics this way. I almost always have a dozen differant looks to any one design depending on the colors and turning blocks to get the right design that screams at me this is the one! LOL

Course you can put your own fabric into EQ too and see what it will look like before you cut anything.

Rhonda, I have every piece of fabric that I own on my EQ and then I assign a number to the fabric and where it is located on my shelf. I also keep a small piece of the fabric on a piece of notebook paper stating how much of the fabric I have, and put it in a 3 ring binder.

I wish I was that organized! But as I work with miniatures alot of my fabric would be thought of as scraps to most people. I usually only buy a half yard at a time and then as my friend Dorothy puts it it looks like a mouse has been at the fabric! I just snip off what I need and put the rest back on the shelf.

I did at one time keep a clipboard and I stapled small bits of the fabrics I bought on a paper and wrote where I bought it and the date. But I didn't keep that up.
