Yes, cookie cutters make wonderful templates for appliques. I have a set of hearts, animals and flower cookie cutters. If you are using the aluminum cutters just make sure the edges are smooth so as not to snag the fabric. Cut at least a 1/4 inch allowance for turning the edges of the applique, or cut the pattern exactly if you are doing a fusible & machine applique.
