Have had a long but exciting couple of days in Minneapolis. One of the things I do when I'm not sewing is act as a parliamentarian for Lutheran congregations and groups.

Yesterday and today I was the parliamentarian for the Minneapolis Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Those 700+ lay people and clergy did several things, but one thing they did was very exciting, to me.

For the first time, ever, they elected a woman as their new Bishop! Her name is Anne Swerrengsen (probably spelled incorrectly!), she's 56 and her resume is impressive. Minneapolis is the largest Synod in the ELCA, so having a woman Bishop there will, hopefully, affect the rest of the church as well.

So I've not sewed for three days! I spent Thursday getting ready and driving to Minneapolis, and then yesterday and today at the conference. Actually, I did finish handquilting one of my mini's in between business that I had to pay attention to. Tomorrow I plan to finish it and begin on a new one. No time to waste!

    Leslie,
I have no idea how I got to your blog but I'm excited for you about your experience with the ELCA election. My husband is ELCA and is currently serving as Region 2 Director for Lutheran Men in Mission. I'm a Certified Christian Educator in the Presbyterian Church USA. We've been married almost 5 years and enjoy serving in ministry together in both denominations. Currently, we are working together on a certificate in Town & Country Ministry through Wartburg Theological Seminary online.
    Blessings to you, Cathy

It is exciting to see such good things happening in the Church. I am not Lutheran but am a Christian. Raised Quaker and belonged to a Baptist church. Faith is ingrained in me and I so appreciate hearing of such good things! The Lord blesses those who follow his footsteps!!

    Leslie,
I also do not know what made me go to your blog. But,that being said, I am a relatively new convert to the Lutheran Religion.

Four years ago My husband and I adopted our foster child . We are both retired and had decided to become Intensive Care Fostercare parents. Well, Joseph had heard somewhere in his past that He was considered Lutheran altho He did not remember ever being in church.

My husband and I belonged to a different denomination. We wanted Joe to have a good connection with some religion. Sooooo....I went online and looked around at web pages from different local Lutheran churches. Well, Grace Lutheran Church, in So. NH won by a landslide.
We have been there ever since . Joe has a strong connection with " his " Church family . Joe was baptized and confirmined at a tearful ceremony.

We also love our church . We have told our Pastor and others that
coming to this church made us all feel like We had come home. We felt that We had always been meant to be here. It just took us awhile to get here...lol

Our church is associated with the Missouri synod. I am pleased about your good news. I may not live long enough to see that happen here but I am happy anyways. Our church Family have made us enjoy the here and now.

Thank You for giving Me a forum to express this to the right QB thread here.
I am a newbie to the craft of quilting . I look forward to better and more quilting in my future .

    PEACE to You and yours.....Alice

Hi Cathy! Maybe you were led to my blog! There are so many ways to serve the church, aren't there? I do find it exciting to be in a room with so many wonderful people, knowing that we agree on the basics, even though we disagree about so many of the fringes. This Assembly also took a public position against a question that will be on the ballot this Nov. in Minnesota. This was not a unanimous decision, anymore than the vote for Bishop was unanimous, but democracy rules in the ELCA. I love that about this church.

Alice, I am also an adult convert to Lutheranism. I grew up in the UCC. I am an enthusiastic member, but also a skeptic, at the same time. There are so many denominations, created through so many schisms that no one remembers anything about anymore.... It is sad that humans disagree so much.

But I am glad that you and your family have found a home in the LCMS congregation. There is nothing like finding a warm, friendly, supportive congregation. Even though I belong to the ELCA, I have visited several LCMS congregations, and have been warmly welcomed. As a matter of fact, an LCMS congregation that I visited used a version of the Apostle's Creed that was beautifully written without all of the 'Him's' and His's that usually appear. Surprising, for a denomination that does not ordain women, I thought.

Good for you for adopting someone who needed you. My kids were both born in Korea. We adopted them as babies, and they are the light of our lives, of course. Good for you for fostering, as well. I have thought of doing that, from time to time, but have been unwilling to take the plunge, and now I'm sure that my hubby would think we're too old!

    All the best, Leslie

Well, Leslie.....I would be thinking that We are too old to be doing foster care too. ....But here We are. The need for homes is so great .

I think it is great that You also adopted children that needed You. Both my husband and I were also adopted. I was adopted by my God Parents. My Hunny was adopted by Strangers that wanted 1 maybe 2 boys. When they heard that there were 3 brothers that the orphanage wanted to keep together , if possible , GOD Bless them ,they adopted all three boys .

It's Anne Svennungsen, I think, but even native Scandinavians can have trouble with that name.

You are right! I'll have to work on learning it, at least by May 6 when she'll be installed in Minneapolis. Do you know her?
