On Monday I brought home my brand new sewing machine. I got the Viking Sapphire 930 and it's wonderful. It has lots of options I can play with and it comes with a wide variety of decorative stitching. I bought some accesories as well, including a quilter's table (which is basically an extension table). The wider throat space is going to be super helpful when I get to the actual quilting on my machine.

For now, I've started working from Quilter's Acadamy Volume 1: Freshman Year by Harriet and Carrie Hargrave. I've hand pieced and hand quilted before, but never done anything on the machine except for 1 small bit during a one day course. So the book seemed a really good place to start.

Today I made the first lesson (the center of a sampler, strip-pieced) using cheap fabrics I picked up especially to try things out. It turned out really well. The chain-piecing was easy, but the pressing of the chain was less easy. I did cut the rows apart once all the blocks were attached, because I find it easier to work that way. Tomorrow I'm going to be doing the exact same thing, only this time for real! Let's hope it goes just as well.

I'm very happy with it. In fact, I made another quilter I know so jealous that they're also buying it!

Glad you are happy with your new machine. I have the Sapphire 870 and I love it! It is so easy to use and there are so many wonderful features for quilting. Today I worked on an applique quilt and did blanket stitch around all the applique flowers and leaves - its so fun! Also, I can use any thread and it sews great. I've had mine for 5 or 6 years. Happy sewing!
