Starting Quilter's Acadamy with my new sewing machine

On Monday I brought home my brand new sewing machine. I got the Viking Sapphire 930 and it's wonderful. It has lots of options I can play with and it comes with a wide variety of decorative stitching. I bought some accesories as well, including a quilter's table (which is basically an extension table). The wider throat space is going to be super helpful when I get to the actual quilting on my machine.
For now, I've started working from Quilter's Acadamy Volume 1: Freshman Year by Harriet and Carrie Hargrave. I've hand pieced and hand quilted before, but never done anything on the machine except for 1 small bit during a one day course. So the book seemed a really good place to start.
Today I made the first lesson (the center of a sampler, strip-pieced) using cheap fabrics I picked up especially to try things out. It turned out really well. The chain-piecing was easy, but the pressing of the chain was less easy. I did cut the rows apart once all the blocks were attached, because I find it easier to work that way. Tomorrow I'm going to be doing the exact same thing, only this time for real! Let's hope it goes just as well.
