  1. I'm on a search for Harry Potter scraps and yardage

    by , 02-02-2013 at 04:47 AM
I'm looking for Harry Potter fabric - any reasonable scraps for applique or yardage - for a crib set for my new grandson whose mother is a huge Potter fan. The crib is non-standard size so I am going to make fitted sheets, a quilt, sleepsuit, teething rail cover and valance. Apliqued Potter shapes or coats of arms on the valance would be ideal but I suppose I could used Wizardy shapes too - hats, spells etc. - and the Potter colours. I can't say I'm hopeful since the production line for this fabric ...
  2. Bald Eagles

    by , 08-27-2012 at 02:26 AM
I was on a benefit cruise last night when a child on board spotted two 'big birds' at the top of a tree on an island - bald eagles. One of the women in our local quilting group made a lovely eagle block as her contribution to a raffle quilt - which I now own having bought it from the winner - so I'm going to copy it and make a memory quilt

  3. 64 hexes

    by , 08-16-2012 at 03:16 AM
I managed to make 64 folded hexagons on my trip. It's surprising how much I got done in the car and how short the trip seemed. I'm going to make folded squares on my flight to the UK since I will have seven hours, plus waiting time at airports, to fill with something interesting. Sometimes I knit socks but I'm so interested in folded fabric right now that I'm going to have a kit of standby - a grab-and-go-kit - to fill waiting times at the dentist, at the doctor's - anywhere. and then I will make ...

  4. Handcrafting on the road

    by , 08-15-2012 at 03:28 AM
I'm off to the capital today to keep my husband company on a business trip so I'll be taking hand sewing to keep me happy for the two or three hours he will be in deep discussion with his contacts.
I've discovered that the library has the comfiest leather couch adjacent to the craft section and I can sit there and happily make fabric origami shapes to use in new projects. If the sun shines there's a picnic table outside that is perfect or I could crank up the GPS and go exploring. We were ...

  5. A Linda Hahn quilt design

Linda doesn't trim the corners of the flying geese triangles in the usual way; she cuts the middle layer only leaving the 4.5inch squares intact as a guide for easy piecing so that if the triangles aren't perfect it doesn't matter much.

  6. It's way past dawn and still no sleep

    by , 08-02-2012 at 02:18 AM
I decided to go across to the Studio - skunk or no skunk - and I spent several hours getting my Rami Kim bag to the beading and quilting stage. Last weekend she said her six- hour class should really have been two days but even then I can't see how we could have finished the project. It took me a day to smock a piece of fabric less than 1/4 the area of the back of the bag and then there were pleats and tucks and fabric origami. Now I have to sew tiny beads at all the intersections of the tucks and ...

  7. Can't sleep

    by , 08-01-2012 at 09:57 PM
Well it's 1.44am here in Maine and I've given up trying to sleep. I keep seeing quilt pattern possibilities in my mind and I want to go across to my studio but my DH would have a fit if he wakes up and can't find me in the house.
I'm not scared of crossing the yard in the dark - there's rarely a moose or deer and I haven't seen a raccoon for months. There is, though, a skunk living under the shed and I'd hate to bump into that in the dark when I can't see clearly and it can. It seems to me ...

  8. Smocking

    by , 07-31-2012 at 12:01 AM
I took a six hour class with Rami Kim at the Augusta Quilt Show recently and am now finishing off the bag pattern we started. One small section calls for an 18" x 24" piece to be hand smocked on a 1/2 inch grid and, wouldn't you know, there doesn't seem to be a heat transfer pattern available in that size - they all appear to be rectangular designs, suitable for vertical pleating, which isn't what I need.
Rami was charming and showed us several fabric folding techniques but said, ...

  9. A parcel of triangles and unusual blocks bought from Ebony Love has arrived!

    by , 07-17-2012 at 07:10 AM
I got a parcel in the post yesterday from Ebony Love (quilt designer) after she decided to offer fabrics from her 'orphans' pile which included lots of triangles, a bag of strips and blocks that she had acquired but no longer had time to use, so now I've got to decide what to do with it all. I love getting scraps from other quilters. On a guild retreat I took everything bar the kitchen sink with enough fabric for a quilt or purses and lots of other options because I'd never been there before and ...

  10. It's raining - Again!

    by , 07-17-2012 at 06:48 AM
It's pouring down. The squirrels are wet through, the Mourning Doves are too but they don't seem to care as they are intent on finding the sunflower seeds I've scattered.
At least the thunder and lightning storms have passed. It was quite spectacular the other evening; so spectacular I retreated to a windowless bedroom in the basement in case a tree came down on the house. It's great weather to be quilting, so that's what I'm going to do.
