I made a fantastic dinner last night, roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, creamed kohlrabi, salad and my husband and I plopped ourselves in front of the tv to watch the Super Bowl. (Remember here, please, that I am still watching my intake of food - since my 23# loss last month). And then, this Christina Aguilera got up on the stage and proceeded to sing the National Anthem. I darn near threw up! I have never heard of anything so disgustingly horrible in all my life. She groaned, she growled, she went off the original musical score for OUR National Anthem, she forgot the words, she was a total disgrace. God help us if other countries think that this is all we think of OUR National Anthem. She is down there to lead us in singing it, not to put points on her resume', which I don't believe she could. I don't think there was one soul who could sing OUR National Anthem the way she croaked it out! The football players who usually stand there with their hand on their heart were looking upward for the fly-by and didn't show any respect for OUR National Anthem.

Sorry to vent my spleen, but I was totally ashamed of her and the powers that be that did not insist that she sing that song with the respect that is deserved. Yes, I know that it was originally a bar song, but that was almost 200 years ago.
Yes, I know that we are the land of the free, but we are also supposed to have some plain old simple common sense and use it when we are singing OUR National Anthem.

I agree, my dau. says I taught Jesus in sunday school.Just because I ask for my senior discount @ the Goodwill,lol.This country is going to hell in a hand basket!

As bad as her rendition was, the truly horrible part is that it isn't the worst. It is exceedingly rare for anyone to sing it correctly on the national stage. My son (19 yrs old) said someone should contact that House Committee on Un-American activities. He was joking, but when teenagers can see how awful it was you know it was awful!

I agree this country is going to hell in a handbasket. (I feel like my parents, who have longed passed). No respect for anyone or anything anymore. Heck, I invited my DH son and family last week for the game and dinner yesterday and not even one reply as to if they would like to come. I even said let me know so I know how much food to plan for. Not a peep and of course, they did not show. And, I will NOT call a second time to follow up on invite. This happens all the time with them. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Gotta keep inviting though cause I love seeing the grandkids. And we are only invited to their house for birthdays and Christmas.

It could have been worse with the National Anthem, they could have asked Roseann Barr again!!!!

I am only in my thirties and my husband and I talk about how the younger ones are so lazy and have no respect for anyone anymore. Don't get me wrong, I have always been a spit fire but this newest 14-28 year olds are super lazy. NO ambition to ever move out of home or get a good job. ugh. We have lots of family and people around us who are just happy skating by on their parents income. Wow, now I sound old. :-)

i can speak only for myself.

first ... i do not equate "football" to "this country". there are tens of millions of us who never watch football. we couldn't care less - and that includes the Super Bowl. so i do not consider what goes on there to define me or my fellow Americans.

second ... football is just like any other form of public entertainment. it's a business. the owners and promoters will cater to "the lowest common denominator". they are not concerned about the quality of the experience they offer. their first and final considerations will always be popularity - as measured in the target market - and ticket sales.

from what i've read here and in the so-called news, i expect i would have agreed (had i watched) that our anthem had been butchered. i could only guess about the reason(s).

however, grousing about it here isn't a step toward change - if that is in fact what most football fans want.

send letters (not email; not phone calls. use snail mail for its visual and physical impact on the corporate mail rooms.)

write to the television station on which you watched the game.
write to the network(s) that broadcast the game.
write to the record label who sells the singer.
write to every company that broadcast a commercial during the game.
write to the store(s) that sell the products that were advertised.

heck ... write to your Senators and Representatives for good measure.

Never forget ... unless you/we take constructive steps to at least try solving a probem, you/we are and will remain (let's say it altogether now) ... part of the problem. ;-)

I need to stick up for the younger generation. I have 2 children, 18 & 20, both have never been in trouble, go to college and work, my son works 30 hrs a week a 5-11 shift at a warehouse and it is seasonal so he works a few months then has about 2 months off then back to work for about 3 months and goes to community college, he lives at home and is a big help.
She goes to a state school and works about 20 hrs a week in retail. She is a real go getter, he is more laid back. They are not perfect, but neither am I. I know lazy people of every generation, and go getters of every generation. And I missed the national anthem, I was driving home from work. Did see the 1/2 time show, liked that.

I know not all the younger ones are this way, but my soon to be 23 year old step-son falls into this group. I forced him to move out last fall, by not allowing his GF in my house. My DH does help him out, but at least he makes him help around here for it. And he thinks he knows it all, can't tell him anything. Guess this just hit a raw nerve this moring, sorry for going off topic.

I watched it, am not particularly a fan. She sang it the way she sings all songs. It is a free world and she is permitted to put her own swing on it. There is a button on your remote that you might want to try using next time you see something you don't approve of, called the off button.
