Thank you - learned something new today.

How about the R in the circle? What is the magic combination for that?

For Macs it's ® Press the Option(Alt) and R.

It seems that this will only work if you have a numerical keypad to the right of your keyboard - I have a netbook, which is lacking this. So far, I have tried some of the other alternatives, and they don't seem to work either, with the exception of Inserting a Symbol on my Word, so thank you for that.

® is Alt plus 0174
also:
¼ is Alt plus 0188
½ is Alt plus 0189
¾ is Alt plus 0190
¢ is Alt plus 0162
º is Alt plus 0186 (the degree symbol, like it's 80ºF outside)

For Macs: (at least this one)

º - Press Option and the Zero (the row on top - not the keypad zero)
™ - Press Option and the number 2 (the row on top)
£ - Press Option and the number 3 (the row on top)
¢ - Press Option and the number 4 (the row on top)
∞ - Press Option and the number 5 (the row on top)
§ - Press Option and the number 6 (the row on top)
¶ - Press Option and the number 7 (the row on top)
• - Press Option and the number 8 (the row on top)
ª - Press Option and the number 9 (the row on top)

Review: © - Option and g
® - Option and r

Are there others?

Time out for a geek moment. Look on your notebook for the function key (usually labeled Fn in blue). Most laptops have an alternate function for many keys and there should a numeric keypad hidden on yours. The function key switches those keys to their alternate functions. Look for blue numbers on some of the letter keys. Usually M=0, J,K,L=1,2,3, U,I,O=4,5,6, and 7,8,9= 7,8,9.

So, try pressing the Fn key, then hold down the Alt key and type M J O L (that would be 0163) and see if you get a £ sign when you release the Alt key (crossing my fingers here).
