Why is it so expensive? I know it is labor intensive becasue I looked up what you have to do to make it. I buy a 4 ounce bar for $4.25 and I love how it treats my skin. Talk to me about it. I would love to hear what you have to say about it. Is it as healthy as they claim it is?

This is one of the things I want to do. I have been buying soap with out chemicals for some time now and the diffrence is amazing but it does get expensive. I am anxious to follow this thread.

Wish I had the nerve to make the old fashioned lye soap that I grew up with. All our family had long and glossy hair.
I was given some hand made soap last year and the lady who made it moved, so can't get any more. I think she said she used coconut oil in it. If anyone can tell us how to make it ourselves, we'd all thank her/him for the info.
Or where to buy it.

Most products are petroleum based while real soap is often made from olive oil, coconut oil or other real oils. The higher the glycrine the more desirable.

That is why many things are called beauty bar etc. they can not use the word soap. The petroleum based products dry your skin.

It is not that hard to make soap. Melt and pour is super easy and even ones made with lye are not that hard.

But for good soap the ingredients are expensive.

You can find all information online or buy some basic books. Melt and pour is sold by whole Sale supplies plus. I can't remember where I ordered my buckets of coconut and other oils from. Oilve oil was from Cosco. For lye we used a drain cleaner that is pure lye. Been awhile since I made lye soap but to me it is the best.

Hi, my daughter and I make hand made soap and sell it. The difference between store bought and hand made is the ingredients and the process. We use Olive oil for the moistruising, coconut oil for the suds, other vegetable oils, and fragrance oils. There is nothing to compare. We started making it because my newborn grandson had very dry skin. The soap helped him and the rest of us enjoyed the difference it made in our skin. You can e-mail me for my facebook page.

I make goats milk soap using a rebatching method. Basically, using a shredded base that we buy from a farm, melting it down and adding fragrance. Then we pour it into a log mold, wait for it to cure (at least 2 weeks) and then cut it into bars. We have not used store bought soap for the last 15 years. Here is the website

My mom used to make lye soap back in the '60's and it would tear your skin off. Now I am told lye is in the handmade soaps but the one I tried was so gentle. I just loved it.
