I thought that I should check with the experts on this one. I have a cat and a sensitive DH. If I use scented cat litter he says it smells like an "old gas station bathrooom" and unscented litter smells like cat ****. Is there anything out there that he might find acceptable? The cat isn't picky.

Cat litter alternative ... does he have some of the absorbent pebble stuff that he puts on the machine shop floor when they have an spill oil? It works great for the litter ... now if it meets his requirements?

Now a question to you .... what is your dog wearing? a life jacket?

We use "Fresh Step" litter. It consistently gets the best reviews on Amazon, and we can buy it at Sam's Club in bulk.

There are other things you can do to reduce odor.

One is to use Kitty's WonderBox inside a plastic litter box. The WonderBox is made of compressed paper fibers and allows air circulation to the litter. We use a liner on the plastic litter pan and place the WonderBox in that, replacing the WonderBox every month. (Still need to clean the litter every day!)

I'm planning to try out litter sifters soon to make cleaning the litterbox even easier. Thes are a stack of about 30 flat sieves that you place in the box before adding litter (edges hanging out over pan). Every day you just lift the top sieve to get the bad stuff out and leave the good litter in.

Another thing we have started using is a "litter locker", which is basically a garbage can specifically for used litter that locks the odors away.

Yet another thing you can try is OdorZOut powder, placing it in the bottom of the litter pan before adding the litter. I haven't tried this yet, but it gets good reviews.

All of these things are available on Amazon; it's worth reading the reviews to see if they are something you want to try.

p.s. We used to use a closed litter box, but have switched to an open box with some of the above. I think an open box actually works better.

My Mom has 2 cats...she uses unscented kitty litter and also puts baking soda in it...she used to use the special and expensive Arm and Hammer powdered kitty litter deodorizer, but found that just plain baking soda works as well without adding alot of extra scents...Naomi

I've changed over to the World's Best Cat Litter (yes, that really is the name of it.) I love it because it really absorbs odor and liquids extremely well and when it's not nearly as heavy as the clay mixes.

Testimony - I had this at a 50% mix with the clay stuff. I left for a week for my grandmother's funeral; a friend made sure they were fed. (I told her not to worry about the boxes). When I came back, I did not smell the boxes until I moved them to completely empty the pans & start over.

Fresh Step is by far the best....scoopable. I never actually empty the litter box, just keep it scooped and add to it to keep it at a decent level. I use no additives or anything else. We have 2 litter boxes and 6 cats and absolutely NO SMELL. glenda

Also a tip for others.....I use a 4" taping knife ( for taping sheetrock seams) and scrape the bottom and sides before I scoop.
