No, she's just promoting her business and it's a tax write-off. If you've always exchanged cards in the past, no need for you to change.

Just a card. Did she enclose a greeting card with the gift she sent or just her business card?

It sounds more like a free sample than a gift.

Amen to that one! Unless of course you have something you could sell her....

If you have not been in the habit of exchanging birthday gifts over the years, it seems odd to start now, unless you have become closer, which seems not to be the case.
When you say a gift from her business, do you mean like a mug with her company name on it or something?!!

That should work! However, I have a friend who does this every year for Christmas, but through the rest of the year does not usually even answer emails. DH won't let me extend gift giving that far as we have been putting 3 kids through college over the last 8 years. So I explained this to her once and always send her a thank you note and a BD and Christmas card every year. It's puzzling that she continues to do it.

The gift was a food product from the line she sells online, at stores, and at craft fairs. Yes she did include a birthday card.

Thanks all of you for the input, I think a card for her will do it.
