Default A bit of advice on computers

Yesterday I had to drive 96 miles round-trip to the only computer tech we trust. Even after blowing out the dust from the power supply in on of the computers. It died, our tech said the dust killed it. Luckily the power supply replacement is going to cost $135.00 total with install.

So, even if you think you got it clean, do it again. Oh and if you have a video card make sure that heat producing puppy is clean too.

LOL I chuckled at this post. My computer is in the same room as my quilting room and my parrot! I have learned how to take mine apart and vacuum it - once a month!!!!! The dust after a month is scary, I can't imagine 6 months to a year!

We live off a dirt road so the beasts get blown out once a month.

Wow!!! When I used towers for my PC I never even thought about blowing out the dust - and I lived in Phoenix for many years. When my computer died about 1-1/2years ago I was going to just get another tower as my monitor was just fine, but I ended up getting an all-in-one - which I love (saves tons of space on my table) - so I’m guessing I have nothing to dust anymore. But that sure is something many computer owners don’t even know to do. Thanks for the heads up.

I would assume gently using canned air to get the dust to vacate the area. If it has a fan or openings dust can get sucked into it.

don't use canned air or any other method to "blow out" dust inside a computer.
    or a sewing machine.

the forced air can cram some of the dust and other shmutz into the nooks and crannies.
use a vacuum to suck it out.
maybe a skewer point, a tweezers, or a small brush for the stubborn clumps.

I took in my hard drive computer tower. old style. worried about cat hair. almost none in there! i was greatly surprised and pleased. i have three cats and they used to be near my tower all the time. Now it is in a desk area behind a door.

I keep my laptop elevated at least 1/2 inch so air can flow under it. It's hard to keep the inside dust free when it's all sealed up.
I buy the cheapest laptop with dvd player. I never get them fixed just buy another. Do you know my last one lasted over six years and now this one is going on three. I paid $198 for the last one and $149 for this one. I buy when Walmart has a big clearance sale on them. The laptops now all have the capability to do what I want to do, email,up load photos and videos, stream, internet, dvd, word and EQ. I bought another one when the price was $129.99 online to have when this one dies.

My computer has definitely done better since I moved it out of the sewing room. The main culprit now is a heat seeking cat who would like to snuggle up next to the exhaust vent on my notebook computer. I have to keep a little wire basket wedged in next to it to prevent this. I always turn it off at night to make the area less attractive to her.
