Default Black Friday Name

Can anyone tell me why or where the term "Black Friday" came from? I know what it is but why Black Friday? It has always been the first shopping day for Christmas And I remember the countdown starting at 30 days tell Christmas, but have only seem Black Friday in the last few years. Not a very pleasent sounding term for the beginning of the Christmas season. Just wondering.LOL

I think that this is the day that sales will take the merchants from the "red" to the "black" This is the day that a profit is made and hopefully the Christmas sales will continue and keep them in the "black".

Moma is absolutely right. The day merchants can earn enough profits to put their books "in the black", bookeeping term for on the plus side.
