It sounds more like a plantar's wart than a callous... you might want to try some meds for that... Callousses don't usually hurt as bad as these do. They can be very hard to get rid of once they get some size to them. They actually grow up into the meaty parts...and can get quite deep. You have to religously use the meds to get rid of them, if that is what it is.

I work with a lady who had a callus on the bottom of her foot. She had to go to the doctor to get it removed. The only problem is it grows back so she has to have it removed about once a year. She tried everything and that was her only solution.

If it is a plantar's wart, and they are usually round, tender....the best/easiest way to get rid of it is a doctor's visit.... My daughter messed around with her's for over a year and she had went to the doc and they had to freeze it to get it to heal... They only get worse, they never go away on their own. Also, it is a virus and is contagious...like athelete's foot is.

I get calluses and my husband uses his dremel to take them off. He's very, very cautious and just barely brushes the callus with the dremel, but you can tell it's working by seeing the dust fly. Well, I guess it would actually be skin, not dust, minute, dust-sized flakes of skin. I guess that's not accurate either. Okay, minute, dust-sized flakes of callus. Well, I imagine you know what I mean.
Anyway, I can tell when he's getting close to good skin because it feels hot. I usually yell or scream at that point to let him know he needs to stop. :D
He's also been known to use his sharp pocketknife to trim calluses off, but the dremel is probably safer as long as it's used carefully.
The podiatrist I go to once in a while also uses a dremel for calluses. I think my DH does just as good a job and it saves the expense of an office call.
He's pretty handy when it comes to ingrown toenails, too.
By the way, none of the above applies if it's a plantar's wart. :D

I noticed a wart growing on the bottom of my foot last winter. Old wive's tale or not, if you have a cold, before you to bed at night, you put Vicks on the bottom of your feet and put on a pair of socks. I had a heck of a cold last winter so greased my feet up and eventually the cold and the wart went away! I read somewhere that people also use Vicks to control athlete's foot, too!
