If you use click-n-ship and print your own postage label online then you get free delivery confirmation. Also if you are mailing to someone in the military with an APO or FPO address the post office will give you a $2 discount on the postage. If you are mailing overseas to military I suggest you send it asap. I think the cut off to guarantee it to arrive for the holidays is the 1st week of Nov.
Here is a link to the boxes. If you click on the + sign on the boxes it gives you the prices.

I usually figure , over 2 pounds, I will check UPS to see if it is cheaper. Here is a link to a tool that will compare rates for your package.

As others have said, if it will fit into a flat-rate box then USPS is the way to go.
If not - and if it is heavy and going west of the Mississippi, then check out UPS or FedEx.
May, if you are a frequent shipper, you should check out the various flat-rate boxes at http://www.usps.com . They do have free boxes that are NOT stocked at the local Post Office branches. They have a wonderful board-game box, which will hold a bolt of fabric (still on the cardboard) or three bolts if you take the cardboard out. And they have other sizes and shapes too.
