Default Crochet, granny square afghan

Wellllll, you know when you have something in your head but it doesn't turn out what you think you wanted?? Granddaughter mentions an afghan she saw in a TV show (don't remember which). Hey!! I crochet. "Darling what colors did you pick for your living room?" "grey and black" "oh dear" "what accent colors, red, yellow, blue, green?" "red" OKkkkkkkk I can do that Black, grey, red and a little white, easy-peasy. Finished the squares last night and started laying it out. Oh Dear my head hurts. I keep ending up with diagonal stripes. I need help, I would prefer if the squares had a more random look, I have yarn to make more/different squares if needed. Help!!

I like it but you could try chevrons or 9 patch. I saw a hint on Pinterest for no knot yarn joins. I tried it and it works and I think it's on YouTube too.

I quite like the diagonal appearance of the afghan.

How kind of you to make this for your granddaughter.
I am sure she will treasure it, no matter what layout you end up with.

Instead of all the handsewing, I would crochet them together.

I like both layouts, but I think the 2nd is my preferred. LOL

I like the solids interspersed with the multicolored blocks, as in your first layout. To me it looks more balanced and cohesive. And I LOVE that border!

There's something about an on-point setting in both quilts and afghans that just seems to make them better!
So for me, yes, I'd go for on-point.

Comparing the two layouts, I do like the solids mixed into the body of the quilt, better than on the outside of the 2nd layout. Perhaps put them in, creating layers ..... rings around a group of multi-coloured blocks. Not sure if I am explaining it right.

Your final border idea will be perfect, whether in multi-colours, or perhaps stick with her grey and black main colours, to help frame up the inner beauty!

A great quilt!

Thanks everyone, going with the on-point layout with the additional borders, one white, grey, red and then black on the outside. Even though I hate working with black!! LOL
