Do you think it's possible for a cat to have Alzheimer's? My Minnie is around 16 years old and has been acting very strange just lately. We moved to the house we are in just over a year ago and she seemed to adjust just fine (except for the fact that she sleeps all day under the quilt on my bed--before we moved she never went under the covers). Anyway, in the past few weeks she seems very confused at times ... looking around and looking at me like she doesn't know where she is or who I am. Plus she has started going to the bathroom on the carpet in my bedroom. YUCKY!!! Has anyone else ever had this problem?

I feel your pain. My calico seems to have had a stroke. It has taken months for her to come back to somewhat normal. I thought she was a gonner several times. She is doing much better. She has been an inside/outside cat. I put her back outside and she seems to be thriving.

I don't have cats but it sounds like maybe a trip to the vet is in order. When my friend's cat started going on the carpet it was due to a urinary tract infection but with the confusion too it might be more.

She's getting old - she sure is a beauty.

Maybe the move has her addled.

I agree with Raptureready...a trip to the vet is in order. Frequent peeing is usually a sign of a simple bladder infection, cheap and easy to treat. Her confusion may be because she keeps having to pee or is suffering discomfort. I have a beautiful old girl..Sarah who is very similar to your Minnie also 16...Sarah had a bladder infection about 5 yrs ago, she never messed the floors but was using the shower drain, which she only does if desperate/accidently locked inside.

Senility is common in older cats, my sister has a cat who is 19 and has been diagnosed with senility...she has become very vocal and wanders about at night...

Hope all goes well...keep us posted.

I echo what the others have said, the going on the carpet is a strong suggestion of a urinary tract infection. I don't know about senility in cats, but I do know that when the elderly get a urinary tract infection, they can become very, very confused. When I was working at the nursing home, very often abnormal behavior was the first sign of a UTI in the resident.

Your Minnie kat sure is beautiful. Hope you can find out what is going on.

I'm a cat lover and owner. I just read an article about senility in cats. Very similar symptoms to your kitty. But I also agree she should be checked if she's urinating out of the box. Could be the UTI or senility but the vet can tell you.
She's a beautiful little girl!!

She is beautiful. I had a cat who used to get under the quilt on my bed when he was stressed. Hope the vet can give you some answers.

I would definately take her to the vet. It might be something wrong with her kidneys. I had two poodles, and both of them had kidney failure. My oldest one started piddling without even realizing it. The poor thing would be standing in the kitchen and the next thing you knew there was a puddle underneath her. I attributed it to simply being so old, but then she started acting strange. She seemed to be disoriented, etc. Take you furbaby to the vet.
