I know they make a device to do this, just Google "lotion applicator."

i don't usually have a need to do that, but when i have done it, i find that the back of an old wooden spoon works.

I put a washcloth on the end of my wooden backscratcher secured with a big rubberband. Works fine for me and is long enough to reach wherever I need it.

The last time I sunburned my back, I used a rubber spatula for aloe vera. You could try that for lotion.

Here's a link to a tool I bought on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DQGPXY/
Works great, but is no longer in stock. Search Amazon for other options. This one has a plastic pad which makes it very easy to clean; we just wipe it off with a washcloth when necessary.

Bed, Bath and Beyond has a really nice applicator for the back, and it is nice and big with a long handle, so you can reach all areas of your back. I have one, and it is so nice!
