i use hotmail as my secondary mailbox. i only use it for sewing and quilting. i have a folder titled 'member names'. they stack up as i enter them, but not in alphabetical order. alphabetical order does not seem to be an option. it says "sort by", but offers only date, topic, etc.

since every name in the list has an email or phone number or something, i don't want to have to redo every one over. besides, every new one will be out of order. i can't move the names around manually either.

hotmail is free. i'm not paying for it, so i don't have full service as i would with a paying account.

can anyone help me?

Are you talking sorting the e-mails you get or the contact list? I assuming you mean contact list.

Contact list: click on "contact list" on the left of the "page" -- this is the page you see when you click on "mail". when you're in the contact list, in the header just above the first contacts name you will see "name" with an arrow up or an arrow down. Click on that and it will do an adjustment. One way will make Adams the first name you see. The other way will make Zorro that first name you see.

If this doesn't work, let me know.

when you go to the inbox page, on the left side there is a column of 'folders'.

they can called 'fabrics', websites', etc. i have one called 'member's names'. when i open that folder, up pops a list of member's names. they are listed in the order in which i entered them. the newest on top.

what i want to do is put them in alphabetical order automatically. i can't figure out how. i think there must be a something i can click on, or a way to manually jiggle the names around to get them in order myself, but they won't move for me and i can't find anything to click on or an option to sort them alphabetically.

when i click on 'manage folders', i can choose member's names, and that opens. i can choose from options, but none of them is alphabetical.
it's so strange that it wouldn't be the most obvious option, don't you think?

Only thing I found for organizing contacts is,
on your right (Both when you first open hotmail and while you're in your inbox)
there's a link that says "Messenger" and then "Options" next to it.
Click on "Options" and scroll down and select "more options"
down at the bottom of this page is a category named "Customize contacts"
under that is "display contacts as..." Click this link and it'll give you 4 options.
Select one of them and it will organize your contacts alphabetically.
:)
Hope this helps and does what you wanted it to :)

yes, it works for contacts. but i'm not trying for contacts, i'm trying for a list of names within a folder. on the email page, there is a column on the left. you can stack up folders here. within a folder, you can have a list of names, i.e. may bloom, jonas smith, barbara gluck, etc. as you add to the list, the names appear at the top according to the listing date. most recent on top.

Question: is there a way to alphabetize the names, regardless of when
they came in, and

Question: is there a way to re-order them, so that they list last name first?

the second question is not that important. i simply add the names they way i want to look for them. but finding them would be so much easier if they were alphabetized.

Sowwwy I misread, let me try this again Will use a few pics to make sure I'm understanding this time.

When you receive emails from folks who're on a specific list they go to your "Member names" folder correct?

If so try the following.
If not, Sorry no Idea how to help. :(

Okies so this is the type of page you're wanting to organize alphabetically? *Pic 1*

Pic 2 shows the options for sort button
The one that's highlighted "From"
Clicking it will orgainze the emails alpha by the person who sent them click once and it goes from a-z click again and it goes from z-a.

as for your second question I got no idea. sorry

And if I'm still not understanding what you're needing I offer an even bigger sorry. guess my brains more than fuzzy today

and the red arrow is pointing to the sort button you're referring to correct?

we are miscommunicating. i know about the contacts list. that's not the one.

on the left hand side of the inbox page there is a column. in that column there are folders with titles, such as "ON ORDER". within that folder there is a list of websites, or merchandise, whatever.

as you add something to that list, it appears in the order of the date it was listed. last entered, first listed. i want to change the order from date listed to A-Z listing. i can't find a way to do it.

i looked under options and none of the options include that capability. maybe it isn't possible. do you know a way?

Butterflywing....Are you sure you're not talking about "favorite"???? That's not in the hotmail account...that's on your internet service provider. Since I changed to IE8 that has changed for me. Favorites is where you click on a favorite web page and you can go back to that to find that page without having to search.

See if this is what you're talking about...

Go to the top on your menu......and click on FAVORITES. In that you will see "organize favorites"....That is where you can move things around. Unfortuantely it seems that sometimes they automatically switch to alphabetical order and other times it seems to just put the latest one on the bottom.

Hope this is it...if not, let us know -- I'll try something else.

noooooo

but thanks

here goes: on the left hand side of the inbox page there is a column that says inbox, delete, junk, etc. under those there are folders that you have added according to your own needs. as an example, let's say i have a folder called ON ORDER. when you open that folder you see a list of orders that look like emails, that i'm waiting for. they are listed by their web names, according to date of entry, last entered, top of the list. right?

ii want to list them a-z. if i'm looking for zelda's fabrics, i want it be at the bottom of the list. i don't care when i placed that order. annie's attic should be on top. even if i ordered it 3 months ago. these 'emails' would open the same way as real emails do. just like an email. and it shows what you ordered.

since this is inside a folder, i'm thinking there should be way to a-z the contents. there is no option for this. nor can i click and drag into the order i want. i would have to retype the entire order, one by one, in a-z order, and delete the old ones as i go. but then as soon as a new one is entered it's out of order again. with no way to insert it in a-z order.

i thought someone here might be able to help me, but it may not be possible.

thanks for trying to help.
