Dogs and Flea Pills

I have 4 dogs that pretty much run the house around here :lol: an Irish Setter, 2 Pomeranians and a Chihuahua.
If we did not give our dogs these flea pills the fleas would take over the house and yard, so it is a must have thing to do around here.
The dogs are supposed to eat them like treats (just like the HeartGuard we give them and they love) but trying to get them to take it is like trying to get me to go to the doctor if I am sick.......it aint happening! :roll: :lol:
The little ones, they are fairly stupid and you can sneek it in with table scraps but Dixie my Irish Setter, dont even let her see you getting the box out she will know what going on next. I have crushed it up to powder form and tried to slip in a hamburger, red beans and rice, potatoes and gravy but she will not touch it.
I finally had to literally throw it down her throat and rub her neck while holding her snoot shut tonite and what did she do but throw it up because you have to have food with the meds or they will get sick. Apparently she grazed the kibble bowl before dinner and then when I fed her a hamburger patty and some fries it was more than her tummy could handle. So we figured we just wasted that $18 pill and I am going to have to do it again in a day or two.
And before someone says just use the topical stuff let me tell you the here in the south it is just a waste of time. The fleas like that stuff better than mosquitoes dig Off!!
Do you have the same trouble with your puppers or are they pretty okay with taking pills. And what do you do to fool them into taking them?

We roll ours up in a whole slice of cheese ~ the cheap American cheese that is individually wrapped...by the time you roll it up and mush it around, the cheese is pretty much stuck all around the pill and so far no one has managed to eat the cheese and NOT the pill.........yours sound a lot smarter than mine though ;)

I've never heard of flea pills....but you can bet that I'm going to find out about them! They tell me that there's no flea problem in Central Oregon...but tell that to my dogs as they scratch themselves raw! The topical stuff and flea shampoos don't work worth a darn!
My little guy (5 months old) will scarf down anything I put in front of him if he thinks I'm going to eat it first... the "old man" will not, and recognises pill bottles. An hour or more before we give him a pill, it gets wrapped in cheese...I sneak it out and put a few cheese cubes with it, and get the pup excited, which means that Jake thinks he has to have some too...he wolfs it down before he knows what it is...

Oh the trials of having dogs! Would love to see a picture! I had an Irish when I was younger, and now have 3 English Setters, Llewellens... the smaller ones. Sofie and Maddie are in my avatar.
We ususally have to "mold" some cheese around any pills that they take. Thank goodness we don't have to much trouble with fleas around here. Try letting Dixie eat a little of her food, then "stick it down her throat" and then let her have the rest of her food. It may work!

I agree with you about the topical stuff. We were over-run by fleas in Hawaii. Used EVERY brand of that topical stuff that is on the market and NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING worked. I finally had to borax the backyard. Thank God it was only an 8x8 area and also all the carpets in the house...ok, the entire house since it was all carpet but the kitchen and bathrooms. I then, had to take kitties to groomers for baths. Took almost a year to get fleas under control doing it that way.
Will have to look into the pills to see if they make them for cats since we are headed back to the states in about a month and half.
As for getting pup to take pills? No clue....I've always done it the hard way, open their mouths, insert pill and hope they swallow.

Tink takes a pill everyday(asthma)...she gets it wrapped in cream cheese or butter. First she licks my other finger to get the taste and then she gets the pill ball, then she has to keep licking my fingers till I'm sure it is down. Fortunately, she is small and takes a farely small pill. But if you compare her size to the pill...it is a horse pill.
She also has to have food in her stomach, or.......we use as little of the coating of cheese or butter as possible, but like the vet says...did you get it in and did it stay???

After placing the pill at the back of their throat, hold the jaws together gently and blow into their nostrils. All the while talking softly, rubbing the front of their neck where the adams apple would be and you will fell them swallow it, and holding the animal firmly but gently. After handling thousands of animals while working the animal shelter, we got pretty good at it. One of the girls just had a horrible time giving it to them. She stuffed it in a 1" piece of weiner or one of those pill pockets and threw it in the cage and walked away. She just knew the animals were taking it. I would do my hourly rounds and find the pill on the ground and the pill pocket eaten.
WARNING: some meds cannot be crushed and given as it enters the system too soon or it can irritate the stomache. Check with your vet first.
No real tricks here.
Hope this helps someone. Much easier to demonstrate than tell you about it.
