Come to find out, when I go to bed at night, my husband allows our rescue dog ( a rhodesian ridgeback mix) to join him on the sofa in the den! No wonder Charlie ( our dog) would look at me with his big brown eyes at night while lying in his bed on the floor (yes, he has a bed in the den) . He can't wait for me to leave so he can curl up on the sofa with his Daddy.

He's 80 pounds and snores like a human. I thought it was my husband when I came down stairs. Lo and behold it was Charlie- had to take the pic for evidence!

DH says- Make him a quilt for the sofa and he can lie on that instead of lying directly on the sofa.
Make a quilt! You don't need to ask me twice! BUT....what kind of fabric is best.

should I make a cotton or a rag quilt for a dog? Should I use batting and what kind? Of yeah, DH informs me that Charlie wants doggie prints with purple for his quilt.

how about denim? it should be strong enough to last him awhile.

A friend of mine made a picnic quilt out of upholstery samples with a sheet for the backing.(no batting) It turned out great, very sturdy. Not sure about the washability though.

If it were me, I'd do a rag....love the durability.

Remember the polyester fabric from the 60's .... that's my preference for dog quilts. It wears exceptionally well. Second choice is denim or medium weight upholstery fabric. Something easy to wash, ugly and durable. If the quilt gets left on the couch, most people realize it's the dog's quilt and don't sit on it. I once tried fleece but my cocker doesn't like it, won't lay on it so she got the ugliest polyester from my stash and she loves it.

My labs love their minkee blankie. It was a dog bed I bought at the pet store ages ago and it has a raised outer edge, no batting. But they just love the softness. FWIW

I think a rag quilt is a good idea. Make it sturdy for washing and drying. Your dog is very handsome. Show us the quilt when you are done.

I make quilts for my dogs, they love them!!! I use cotton fabric and 82/20 batting. Your dog is beautiful!!!!!

I used the minky fabric for a blanket for my dog and she loves it. It doesn't take much since it is 60 inches wide. It would be quick and easy to do. I just took two layers right sides together, sewed all around leaving 6 inches to turn, turned it over and slip stitched the opening and then sewed a topstitched 1 inch seam all around. It works great and she likes the material.

I've never seen a dog refuse to sleep on our quilts, so I'd just use cotton (or your fave type of quilting fabric) and make like any other quilt you'd make. Just remember Charlie requested doggie prints and purple - LOL.
