I have a 17 year old cat that has very few teeth left and when she started loosing weight last year I started feeding her more canned food [which used to be just a couple times a week], well I now have a monster on my hands..every 30 minutes she wants canned food. The minute she even thinks you are headed toward the kitchen she is right there and if i don't go she sits and just stares at me. I love her to death but is there any advise for feeding a older cat. I am thinking if she is asking for food this often the food I am giving may not be filling her up.
Any advise would be very much appreciated.
thanks
dee

I'd have her checked for hyperthyroid, symptoms are lots of eating and loosing weight and is very common in older cats. She might need thyroid medication

You are in charge; don't feed her so often. Morning and night; one to two tablespoons is enough if she is eating dry food as well. We have many older cats and they do tend to try to intimidate, but be kind and don't let them. The weight will come off and she will be healthier for it.

Ditto on the vet. Our blind cat is so overweight, but gets little exercise due to her eyesight.

I have a cat with the same problem. It is a little different in that I have to isolate her to feed her because my other two want to jump in on the feast. Our vet has suggested that if she starts to lose weight, that we have her checked for hyperthyroidism so think that is a great recommendation. And although our cats really believe we live to serve them, we are still the boss! Good luck and I hope your kitty is just greedy and not afflicted with diabetes or hyperthyroidism!

I'm so glad she's healthy!!! Sorry I don't have a response to the right food for her. Mine are younger and eat mostly dry.

I almost lost a cat to IBD, I won't feed dry kibble again. Cats are obligate carnivores and eating a lot of grains has the potential to wreck havoc on their health.

My cat died a few years ago and I haven't gotten another one (yet) but any cat I have will eat a grain free canned and fresh meat only.

This is a very good website:
