Sprinkling generous amounts of table salt on carpets really helps. Let sit for a while and vacuum. Worked for me.

I tried the vinegar in the drinking water thing. Then I was told it would (over time) make them sick.

I did put out dishes of soapy water near a night light. Made a big difference. They jump in it.
