Reminds me of the Stepford wives.

We sold our first home to a young woman who was a realtor. Being a realtor doesn't really have anything to do with it, but she was . . . hm . . . impressed with herself, shall we say. Our neighbor at that house called me one day to tell me she was mowing the lawn in a black evening dress. Who knows why.

The list here implies that the only thing the woman should expect from life is the gratification she gets from serving her husband. Further, children are not "treasures," they are people. They have their own needs, and not just from their mother, but from their father too.

It's not realistic or even healthy then or now to expect women to be completely self-sacraficing with nothing coming back in return. And I don't care how gratifying it might be, no one can give from an empty cup year after year after year.
I can understand that. Really marriage seems to me to be about give and take - equally. DH goes to a job he hates because he loves me and wants to support me. I do the chores I hate, because I love him and want to make him comfortable when he comes home. I imagine living this way of life would be much harder if my DH wasn't so wonderful and sweet - I know there are some men out there that aren't so and would demand the things on this list. My DH just isn't one of them. :)

I was mostly raised this way, but it still is a choice, everything is a choice. At one point in my life I rebelled against the idea of this lifestyle - but after a time, and after I met DH, everything just fell into place and it works for me.

With that said, I understand it doesn't work for all women. That's their choice and I happily leave it to them.

And excuse me . . . Don't complain if he stays out all night? And if he gives you an STD, assume you got it from a toilet seat.
It used to be standard practice in those days NOT to tell a woman she had an STD - just because it would implicate her husband in adultery. Also, when AIDS came along, doctors were forbidden to tell a wife that her husband was HIV-positive. Privacy of medical information, etc. I'm not sure that it still doesn't apply.

I just sort of see her talking through the grimace, " you know dear this thing I am pressing into your back..well it is one of those wonderful knives from the set you bought me for my birthday....and then I will clean up with the great shop vac you bought, and oh yeah the carpet shampooer I got for our anniversary, along with the the nifty stain remover you brought home for the wash....and well, I will miss you dear but that mixer sure seems nice, may be I will bake a cake to celebrate." That man had better get her a new sewing machine pdq and maybe a gift certificate to the quilt shop, I think. He he he
I've gotten two vacuums for X-Mas over the years (I requested them) and a great set of new knives because the men in my house didn't like my old ones and thought "I" should have new ones so they could use them. Fine by me! They do as much of the cooking as I do and they're better at it.

Oh, Eddie, remember you are waaaaay outnumbered here (and at home). Of course, we know you're kidding or you wouldn't be surviving in a house with three women.
Hahaha....you have NOooooo idea how right you are. I am outnumbered and never will have the odds in my favor. If I were to show that to my wife and even suggest that she follow it, well...I better be prepared to protect myself! :D
I am outnumbered in my house, too, with hubby and two sons. They figured that they each have one vote. Imagine their surprise when they learned I have 3 votes, plus a tiebreaker vote!

There is one rule that we should remember.

If mama ain't happy NOBODY is happy.

Change is good. DH and I are equals. We share chores too.
