I had one in my neck and it made me hurt worse. And not just the couple of days after the shot. It started hurting so bad I am going to consult a surgeon. Bleck.

Check and see if there is a clinic in your area that specializes in back and neck pain. I got a referral from my GP to one. They took a look at the MRI and then had me come in twice a week for something like 12 weeks for an exercise program. They have specialized workout equipment that isolates the specific muscles involves in back pain. I haven't had back pain since, and it's been several years. This was after 30 years of on/off lower back pain -- sometimes so severe I could walk only bent over. My MRI showed quite a few problems including stenosis, degenerative arthritis, and disc problems.

If the area is sprayed with LIDOCANE, or another numbing agent, I don't have trouble with shoulder injections. They did hurt like H, before another DR in office did inj. and I could not belive the difference.

My Uncle who was a line man, injured his back from falling off a pole while working, in the '60's, and back then the answer to the pain was cortisone shots, he got the shots once every three months, for years. Now, he can break bones in his feet just by walking across the floor. The Dr's now know that it is a dangerous treatment when continues for a long time. I wouldn't trust that drug. I have had one shot of cortisone in my foot for bone spurs and plantars faciitis, it did not help me at all. And it was very, very painful, even if it had worked I don't think I would have the shot again, I can usually handle pain, but this was intense.

When they do it in the joint, the Lidocane does nothing to numb the pain. It is inside pain, they pop the needle into the joint, while you sit in front of a fluroscope (ex-ray type machine) It was not fun and I am not looking forward to getting another one!!!!

My DH has that shooting pain down his leg, the General Practictioner told him it was muscle spams. I didn't believe them and complained till we got an MRI, found out it was a hernated disk. He did decompression therapy (where they pull these to veribrae apart and it "sucks" the disk back in), it did wonders for him. HUGE improvement, and the regular doctor just wanted to do surgery. But from what I've heard, so many back surgeries are considered failures its actually a "disease" now. Failed Back Surgery disease, or something like that. I told him that he was too young and I had to many things left for him to do to take that chance. After he did the decompression, he has some exercises he does at home anytime he starts to feel sore and he seems to be almost normal. I'm so glad we decided against the surgery.

due to fm & arthrtis& a shoulder replacement,i've had shots almost eerywhere,the only ones that i can say really worked were the ones in my knees ,1 a week in each knee for 6 wks.took a couple mos. but finally they worked! i had 3 epidurals in my lower spine about 4 wks apart , they did nothing,they put me out to get them,thank heavn! not to mention cost,$7000 at a crack ! i have really good ins. tho, so cost me 0 out of pocket.some of the others were done in dr's office & would send me up the wall w/pain.i finally found a pain clinic that works w/me,but the only thing that really does any good are the pain meds.problem is,they make me terribly sleepy.just do what i can,putzalong like everyone else!just try to do what i can,but it's really hard.i keep telling myself that i'm 68 yrs old,but still hard toadmit i can't do what i used to !

I've had them three times in my shoulder but I won't do it again. By the time the pain from the shot wore off I was only without pain for a very short period of time--about a week. Since you can only have three per year it just wasn't worth the hassle. Besides, cortizone damages what cartilage that's still there.

I've used Jones Formula 23 with success. It's only temporary but it works for me. It's expensive but it last a fairly long time. I think a 4 oz bottle is 70 or 80 dollars but that will last about 6 months. The relief is well worth it. If you use it three times a day for 4 or 5 days then you can start cutting back. After the next week sometimes it's only once every day or two or sometimes longer. I buy two bottles for myself and one for my brother's Christmas gift every year.

Had them in wrist, hip and spine. The third ( and last one) in my spine just about put me out. Seems the doc went just a little too close to the nerve . You know, you can't move with that needle in your spine, and I didn'T, but it took me 15 minutes to stop shaking and to be able to get off the table. It isn't always too bad to stand, I'd had some that didn't do more than be a little uncomfortable. And some help and some don't. I use Aleve also, when home I get by pretty well, but if I am going to be standing or walking for any length of time, I take a pain pill first! And boy. my doc is very tight about giving those out!!
