Never heard of the dish, but I would eat it without onions. (I don't like raw onions)

Sure, but I add "almost cooked" twisty noodles, and Jet's Ranch instead of milk.

Thanks!
Mom and Dad made this according to taste. And it was chilled for about an hour, with 5 kids and this being a favorite no leftover were ever put in the frig. :)

There was no measuring cups or spoons used in cooking except to bake cakes or cookies.

I cook like this.....all my dry spices are measured in the palm of my hand. I very rarely use a cookbook, if I see something good in a magazine or a restaurant I usually can duplicate it at home just by taste.

Best with fresh veggies from the garden.
Whenever I fix this at work people look at me like I have 3 heads. Don't know what they are missing.
It's good to know I don't really have 3 heads.
So many of you are making me feel better about eating such a humble dish. I find as I get older the simpler foods of my youth are looking pretty good again. We were never overweight, or without a meal. Now I look at my 20 extra pounds and wonder????

We often made this with the sour cream or oil and vinegar as so many of you mentioned. But that was eaten as a salad or side dish to a meal. The chilling in milk was our only dish at many lunches. Wow, getting anxious for fresh veggies from the garden!

Hmm, never heard of it with milk, but we do it with vinegar and a little oil.

We eat a similar dish, tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers, with a little mayo. Salt and pepper to taste. Chill serve, this an old Southern summer dish.
I fix a large bowl when making.

We do it with yogurt, feta cheese crumbles and fresh basil. Yum!
