help identify this work
I found two beautiful pictures at a yard sale this morning that appear to be embroidery. I think it is hand done but not sure. They were basted to old paper like frames. The woman who had them said she has had them a long time and does not remember where she got them. Does anyone recognized what type of work, i.e. is it japanese or just look like it, or can point me in the right direction to see if I can date these. I am going to mat and frame them. Thank you for any help. I took pics of front and back.

They appear to be machine done embroidery to me. Japanese, for the commercial market.
Then again, here is a an interesting article on a California teacher of Japanese embroidery http://whatsitworth.michaans.com/ so perhaps your mom bought it or received it from someone who had made this. The one completed piece I found was not very valuable, considering the amount of training and work that was put into it.

They're beautiful! Given the view of Mt. Fuji, probably Japanese. And probably hand-embroidered silk, given the brightness of the colors. When I visited China, I took a tour of a silk plant where young girls sat with vertical hoops doing this same type of dense hand embroidery with silk threads.

I purchased machine-made silk embroidery like this that was done in China. At a recent state fair, there was a booth with silk embroidery done by hand for sale -- also from China. (They had a demo person there doing the embroidery.)
The backs of these look like embroidery done by hand. My machine-made embroideries are much neater on the back, with lots of threads lying uniformly next to each other.
Edit: After taking a closer look at the backs, I'm thinking maybe these are machine-made backgrounds with hand work for the details and smaller items.
