I"m too weird about having people in my house to ever do this, but let us know how it works for you.

I don't think it's weird.....I really cannot phantom the idea of complete strangers "living" in my home, nor me in someone else's private space. Part of traveling is hotel, motel, b&b,rental type homes, apt, condo, like in timeshares....but not someone's residence.....nor mine, either. I guess the world is passing me by.

My DH felt the same way, and I could never talk him into it. But now that I'm alone I have no such reservations. My quilting room would be "off limits", and drawers would be cleared of things like underwear and jewelry (LOL). Perhaps it helps that I have moved recently, so making the house suitable for guests would not take as long. I really hate staying in hotels and much prefer to be able to fix my own meals. I know that I would care for another person's home as if it were my own, and wouldn't go poking around in things that might be private, and I believe that the person doing the exchange would behave the same way.

Check you home owner's insurance first.

Friends of mine have been doing home exchanges for years. They put everything of value or "hands off" in secure storage. They don't worry about someone damaging things because they are in the others homes, too. The reviews on a bad "guest" would prevent them from ever participating again. My friend likes the fact that she doesn't even have to empty the refrigerator of all those condiments. LOL They have traveled to Italy, France, Spain, England, Portugal, Bulgaria. Last year they even went on a sailboat in the Greek islands. Came complete with a crew. They've been gone for 3 months at a time. They have a condo in Playa del Carmen, MX that they exchange so demand is high and she can be picky about who she lets exchange. I don't think I would like it, but they love it!

There is no way I would rent my house out to strangers. I'm not that trusting.

Make sure you check with you insurance company on this. Like renting and you don't know what kind of person will be really living there and could do lots of damage, it could raise your rate.
