This is new to me too. I have never heard of stick weaving. Very intrigued.

Supplies are pretty simple. Sticks and yarn. I buy dowels at the hard ware store. If I use small ones like these I start them off in a pencil sharpened. Sand the pointy parts on each end. Make sure the tops are blunted or they will pierce the yarn. Don't sharpen the lower ends as much. Drill a small hole through each stick in the beveled area. Wax or oil the sticks. Oooops and use a small wire as a need threader. Determine how long your project is gong to be and run twice that amount through each stick, so the stick is in the middle. I'll be posting a blog soon and I'll post the addy to it here if that is allowed. Starting with 6 is good for beginners. There first two inches are the only tricky ones. You tie yarn to the first stick and then you weave in and out. The threads on the bottom become the warp as you slide the sticks up.

Very quiet and I can do it in very dark places, too.

I am going to have to make some "sticks" for my grand daughter. She has been watching YouTube videos on crocheting lately.

Thank you for showing your craft to us.

Leon,

Thanks for showing us this skill/craft. Won't be doing that next week in the hospital waiting room but starting a crocheted RWB lapghan for my cousin who was in the Navy and recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. Will bring all yarn for project but leave most in vehicle so I will periodically need to get up and walk around.

I once used a variegated yarn. It gave me a surprise striped scarf. One trick is the tension of the yarn around the sticks. If you weave it too tightly it can be quite hard to slip down. That's another reason for the wax or oil. I prefer wax. 1/4" dowel is a good starting point. I learned this through the SCA. Society for Creative Anachronism. Not everyone wants to get bashed in armor. Glad so many are enjoying it.

I keep a small bag with a ball of crochet cotton thread and hook in my car. I crochet dishcloths. I keep them in the bag when finished. One makes a nice gift for someone I see in waiting rooms that need smile.

I asked DH to make me the dowel sticks. I want to try it with ribbon and fabric strips. Thanks!
