my grandmother passed down a simple way. I have not done it yet, but, my mother has and said she got good results.
Put a pan of boiled water in the oven and close the door, the water works as a steam, and should loosen splatters.
Or do what I did, get a self cleaning one. LOL

I use Dawn Power dissolver. I spray it on the inside of the oven, wait about 20 minutes and use a sponge with the green scrubby on the flip-side. And if it doesn't get it all off, I repeat the process.

Elbow grease, gloves, sponge, scrub brush, paint scraper and water. Easy for me because I'm all about prevention (own an antique). Don't let anything spill over. Ever. Don't let anyone else use your oven. :0D If a mess is somehow made, clean it asap.

Several Christmases ago I accidentally boiled over the baked sweet potatoes and the syrup caught fire. Yup christmas eve dinner, house full of people and smoke. DH put out the fire with wet dish towel, and wiped the whole thing down. It was the cleanest it had been since it was new. Wouldn't recommend cleaning this way though.

Depends on what kind of oven it is....I'm a bit like Pookie...but if a disaster occurs I use a low toxicity cleaner, elbow grease and spread newspaper all around in case of drips. If your oven racks are a nightmare, get a big plastic bin bag (black or dark in colour, smother the racks in cloudy ammonia tie up the bag and leave in the sun for a couple of hours, then rinse...they really come up well. Be careful though...ammonia fumes are not good for you so maybe wear a mask and do use in a well ventilated area.
