How did it take me this long?

We had a girl in HS home ec named Ellen who did it at least once a year. At class reunions we still tease her about it. The first week or so of class we would hear a blood curdling scream and it would be Ellen. Our teacher who was a spinster crab apple, we thought, once asked her if maybe sewing wasn't a good fit for her. I got to know the teacher later after graduation and really appreciated her dry sense of humor and skills. Her sweetheart was killed in WWII and she never married.

Update 2 days later: the finger is beginning to heal and is more numb than sore, so long as I don't knock into anything! I can't believe how many of you have done much worse damage, and hope not to be in competition with you in the future!

I finally sewed my finger today. That would probably have been enough, but I instinctively pulled my finger away, which effectively ripped the side of the [pointer] finger away. I did not get blood on the quilt, however, which should get me a few 'positive' points to offset the negative.
Anyone else done this? [the foregoing typed with one finger with large glass of white wine alongside]

I was sewing patches on my DH's Army uniform and had a very large needle in the machine. The needle went through the nail and the point was sticking out on the other side. Had to deaden my hand to cut the needle in two pieces and pull it out.

so sorry. sounds familiar, i must have at one time, but nothing major, or i would really remember it.
i come from a very long line of seamstresses, so have known about the dangers from the time i was knee high to a grasshopper.
even worked in a sewing shop for a short time one year, and i always cautioned the girls i had to introduce to the sewing machine about the dangers of sewing your finger. even my 4-H's years ago, i always cautioned, because i knew it could happen.
take care, and get well quick.
