I love to make American Girl doll clothes for my DGD. I googled "Free American Girl doll clothes patterns" amd got lots of free patterns. I don't know who has had more fun with her doll, DGD or me!

I learned to sew because I wanted Barbie dresses that we could not afford. (They were more expensive than my clothes.) So my best friend's mother had the patterns because she loved to sew doll clothes and let Judy & I use the patterns. I did not make clothes for my daughters' dolls because they didn't seem to want them. Also, I had one of those 1973 portable Singer machines with the plastic gears, they were in high school when I finally got a machine that didn't fall apart every time you turned it on. The gears were so bad I couldn't finish a dress without having it go back to the repair shop. (I sewed like crazy in high school on my mother's Singer and this was such a disappointment.)

Doll clothes are fun but time consuming to make. I made my great niece a whole bin full of clothes for her baby doll for Christmas and used my daughter's original Cabbage Patch and Preemie patterns from 25 years ago. I had to gather up some knits and other fabrics from my friends as I had gotten rid of this type of fabric when I started quilting. Even when I had everything cut out and ready, it still took me half an hour to make a t-shirt and an hour and a half to make a dress and matching panties. My niece loved her gift but now her cousin wants doll clothes and she has no great aunt to stitch for her.

good luck-- hope you share with us when you get them done. My cabbage patchdolls are still in storage down stairs and I loved making clothes for them. I always thought I would have a grand daughter so they would have somethings to play with when they would come over to visit.. grand kids aren't going to happen but I still like them.

I made lots of clothes for my DGD's American Girl dolls, as well. Alas, she is almost 16 and the dolls are all packed up. It was a sad day! The dog got Kit Kittredge and we had to send her back to the hospital for new arms and legs. She was missing a hand and a foot! She arrived safely home, all healthy, in a wheelchair, wearing a hospital gown. Oh how I miss those days!

I made a Barbie doll dress for my DD years ago. It turned out lovely but it was so small and hard to work with those tiny pieces of fabric that I swore - not only while making it - but afterwards that I would never make another Barbie dress/clothing again. And I never have. But good luck to those of you who like to sew the tiny clothes.

that is so awesome of you. I decided after christimas that I wanted to make dolly cloths for little girls for next christmas. So I went to the goodwills and am buying 'babies' and making a few outfits for each one. Then I'm going to clean the babies up real good and give them away to little girls, just because..

Fantastic. kids growing up in shelters are so thrilled to see things as simple as dolls, trucks and boardgames, that it is heartwarming to hear that you are doing this. we cook and serve at several area shelters and always have a few small toys for the little ones who show up with mom. bless you

oh that sounds like fun. I made all my daughters baby doll clothes when she was little. She loved them so much. They all had bonnets and bloomers to match each dress. Hope you post pics when you are done.

Good luck on your new adventure. I used to make Barbie some more lady like dresses when my girls were younger.

I thought about making clothes for an 18" doll, maybe this Fall after the Summer house maintenance chores are done.
I can't wait to see some pictures of their new outfits.
