Call the company she use to work for. They should know...if not call a few of her old co workers. I use to do life insurance death claims...so important that your put the SS# of the person your benes and also the address of your benes...and if they move update your records and make sure they update them. If your family does not know about the policy the money go to the state not the estate...after 5 years once they find out if the person has died. You will not get money if the company that hold the money does not know that the person has passed away or if they know they have passed away but do not know the bene address. Life insurance money goes to the person on the claim...not the estate. They only way they will dicuss anything with you is if your name is on the claim. Also give a copy of the document to the person who will be rec'ing the money...not a friend or neighbor...people are weird when it comes to money...you may think a person is great and wonderful...but you never know...its amazing what people do...and sad. If you have a second family...make sure you see a lawyer to make sure your children will get the money also when you die...wills can be changed. My husbands famiy got nothing...his dad died first...all went to his stepfamily. We could care less but that was not his dad's wish...and its costly to fight...was not worth it...just think...he trusted his wife and stepchildren...HA

i have tried that they keep sending me to the health insurance department. they claim they have changed a bunch of things around and they may not be holding this policy, and some other company dealing with her retirement gifts may know, but they dont know who that would be and neither does TXU who used to be lone star gas. i am so confussed

Keep calling and very important...write letters to the company. They have to address the issue. Letters are the best way to get it resolved. Its a legal document. Write to the president of the company.

You could also talk with your state's department of insurance. They'll have a consumer department to help walk you through this.

I would think the funeral home that handled her remains would know how to find it.

Good Luck!

Sadly its not as easy as people think with out knowing the account numbers and which department to contact. Please make sure to give your family memebers an idea of who to contact...I know many people are very private with money...but you can at least give them a company, address and phone number for them to contact once you have passed away...becareful of caretakers and neighbors...

This is an important lesson for everyone regardless of your age. Keep info updated and in a place where someone can get to it. There's nothing worse than to be grieving and have to start looking for policies. Also unclaimed money of any sort will go to the state. Check your state for a list of unclaimed money in everyones name. There could be bank accounts, ins money, deposits. We've found money several times. Ours is Treasure Hunt Ohio.
