A number of people asked about Freecycle and could not find links to locate the groups. They are often centered in cities and towns, although I am sure they are in rural areas as well.

For those who wanted to find out more, I found that searching for freecycle.com did not do much.

I used my own area and searched for:
Cincinnati Freecycle and got the list of groups in my area.

A more specific search should have those who want to locate a group in their area.

My understanding is that this movement began to try to keep a lot of usable things out of the landfills. Those who are interested in saving our planet for future generations are the ones who avidly use this organization.

I like the adage.....one man's junk is another man's treasure and that can even be sewing and quilting items. Sewing machines are often listed as well as fabric/scraps.

Rules usually are specific that you must give in order to ask for items. Read carefully!

I hate freecycle. I've had more no-shows than anything else. Even when I say please don't be a no-show and let me know if you can't make it, people don't show. I was giving away a nice wooden crib and after 3 no-shows, dh said forget it and threw it away. Maybe other people have better luck.

Oh and the requests for video game systems (with games, please), working computers, cars (newish if possible), a whole house worth of furniture (not the cheap stuff), etc just bug me. lol

HOWEVER, if your freecycle isn't like mine then it's great. We have gotten rid of a couple of things without incident (literally two things, a pool and a back yard play castle/sandbox). So I guess it can be a very good thing too.

eta: I believe most freecycle groups are through yahoo groups. So go to groups dot yahoo dot com and look up your city or county and the word freecycle.

I used it once and gave an old t.v. to a lady for her Mother. met her at Blockbuster video parking lot in my City.

I have heard of Freecycle and think it is a good idea, but I need to more about what type of things you can find. Anything to do with recycling is a good thing.

I have used it. More to give away than get. I have given away a bicycle and TV, plus some smaller items.

I, too, am amazed by what some people have the whatever to request. I don't think there are too many limits. So far I haven't seen any husbands or children up for grabs.

I've used it to get rid of some bathroom stuff when we remodeled. The lady was so grateful and was willing to meet me to get it. Better than tossing it out since no one in the family wanted it.

I have seen though requests for some outlandish stuff with stipulations it be new or because they are setting up a business and need better stuff. If it's free then don't be so picky...you can look at it and decline if you so choose.

You can find anything and everything you can think of on freecycle. it just has to be legal.

My DDIL loves it. I am going to give her a bunch of my apparel fabrics I will never use, to put on freecycle. I can't be bothered. I am skeeved by yard sales and flea markets; I sure wouldn't be able to handle the strangers that might appear on my doorstep.

If I didn't know better, I would think that you live by me! I prefer to donate my stuff to friends and the local task force thrift shop.
