Hi All,

I have never made a bag before but would really love to try it. I am sure this has been asked before but would you kindly suggest an easy bag or tote pattern that a person who is not swift at intricate patterns can do? I think I have figured out how to at least make a pocket for a bag....LOL

I have a piece of bright Kaffe Fassett material that I got last year thinking it would make a nice bag if I ever got to trying one.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated for a site that might sell a bag pattern that I can try. Would love to see what you have made.

Henreette handbacks is a site full of different bags and a sale at present. Also google easy bag patterns and you could use free as well.think of the bag as a box with sides etc you are joining or going to leave out( ie sides) .
They are easy use the magnet catch which goes in before put sections together and you can get feet at well.
Pockets zips come as you go.

I've never tried doing a bag from a pattern. I just
1) decide what size I want it to be, and whether I want the seam(s) on the side or the bottom.
2) cut outside and lining exactly the same size. I often use upholstery fabric or denim for the outside.
3) if not using heavy fabric also cut interfacing or batting the same size as well.
4) next cut 2 strips for handles 3" x desired length. For lightweight fabric also cut interfacing for handles. Or use the purchased webbing.
5) now cut your pocket pieces. These can be from contrasting fabric or from your same fabric.
Either cut fabric so fold is at top or cut two pieces the same size.
6) determine pocket placement and stitch to lining piece or outside being sure to backstitch at least 1" at upper corners.
7) fold straps in half lengthwise right sides together. If using interfacing have it on top when folding.
8) stitch one end and the long edge.
9) turn right side out and top stitch close to both long edges.
10) position handles at top of right side of outside fabric and stitch all the way across
11) place top of lining over handles right sides together, pin, turn over so you can see where you just stitched and stitch lining to outside with original stitching just inside the seam line.
12) open out your assembled piece and stitch so that outside will be stitched all the way around and lining will have a small opening for turning.
13) turn right side out and hand stitch opening closed.
14) top stitch near top edge.
15) enjoy your finished bag!

If you're looking for just a fabric tote that is not quilted, this pattern was well written. http://www.needleandspatula.com/2011...-tutorial.html I made it with my 11 year old great niece yesterday & she had never used the machine before. It has french seams on the sides, and we made ours smaller to fit the book she wanted it for.

I don't remember who, but go to tutorials and search for totes or bags. It is well written and each step is pictured. I made a couple for Christmas gifts a year ago.

I bought Crafty Gemini's Must Have Tote Bag Pattern and made several. I it costs about $3.00. She has a video that you can log into that shows you how to make the entire bag and how to do french seams. The tote bag is not lined but it's a nice tote bag for groceries or library books. It will give you a simple start into bag making.

A cloth bag make like the brown paper grocery bags?

Something with lots of pockets?

What kind of closure(s) do you want? magnetic snaps, ties, buttons, zippers?
