I too would be afraid of pin rash on the machine. It's so ugly.

I use a magnetic pin dish to collect my pins, rather than a pin cushion. Who has time to stick pins into a cushion while they are sewing? I just toss them in the general direction of my magnetic pin dish and it 'grabs' them. So quick and easy. Easy to pick up pins too.

Harbor Freight has little metal dishes with magnets underneath that would work great for this.

I have a newer machine with my fancy stitch buttons there. My machine came with an extra spool pin for twin needle sewing. I'll never use it so I cut the spool pin off the base and glued one of those wrist pin cushions to the base and installed it where the extra spool pin would go next to my bobbin winder. I do need to remove it to fill my bobbins so l mostly use a side winder.

I am teaching a preteen to sew and this would make a good project for her to complete on her own.

That's a neat idea. The only problem I have is the right side of my machine is a touch screen.

Years ago, my mom's singer (that I learned to sew on) had a thick cloth around the top of the machine for pins. Brings back memories.

When I was little my gran would babysit me, and since she sewed, so did I. I used to sew "pillows" for her all the time - little hand-sewn pouches stuffed with scraps. She attached elastic to them and put them onto her machines to use as pincushions, just as you have done (though minus the index card, that's a great idea). I was so proud!

I recently inherited her old machines, and one of them still had one of my little "pillows" strapped to it. <3

Put a solid backing on the pincushion. No pin rash at all.

I remember seeing that. My mom never used it on her machine but I remember some of my friend's mothers having that.
