Yes, we had that rule too. We tried bribing my DD to eat green beans, she ate one and that was it. DS hates navy beans still does to this day, won't allow his wife to cook them, the smell gets to him. I do not care for cooked brocolli or asparagus or sushi, otherwise, I will eat most anything. Just remembered: no boiled fish.

Our granddaughters didn't think they would like asparagus - we coaxed them into trying one bite of it - now we have to dole out the asparagus so everyone can get some!

#3 son absolutely detests winter squash.

We had a similar rule - the 3 bite rule- with the kids. It worked fairly well. and my kiddos who wouldn't eat mushrooms or blue cheese or shrimp are now cured - a more grown up palate has developed. (They can pay for it now from their own paychecks

And after college biology class with Doc Roberts, I would NEVER eat any sushi except maybe a vegetarian combo, because of the parasites that are found in raw fish. I just don't need that kind of trouble in my life!!

LOL! I love all the responses!

We had the clean plate rule when I was a kid. Made me wonder if that is why I have a weight problem - being forced to eat even after I'm full. Never made my kids clean their plates. Although, for my oldest, who not only would clean his plate but have seconds and thirds, if i thought he did not eat enough vegetables (he was my meat eater) I would have him eat one or two more bites of vegetables. My youngest hardly ever ate seconds and would seldom finish his first's. For him, (he really loved his vegetables) I would tell him to eat one or two more bites of meat.

Now days they only eat when hungry and are really good at eating a variety of foods. Well, there is just one thing I try to keep my youngest from doing. My boys are in their 20's now. But, my youngest drinks way too many sodas and they are not the sugar free either. I told him he could cut out 2/3's of his calories just by cutting out his sodas.

There are several foods that I just can't stomach, the primary one being liver! Another is sauerkraut! My Dad loved liver but luckily my Mom did not make us eat it. Probably because she did not like it either! And my Auntie loved to make sauerkraut and her house would stink for weeks!

I do make myself eat just about everything if I'm eating at someone's house so I don't hurt their feelings.

I have a friend that her youngest and her husband are extremely picky. I got to where I would refuse to even try to feed her youngest when he was over visiting. My youngest would chew him out and even tell him that I was the better cook. He would not eat anything that I cooked. I even asked her how she could cook to please every one and she said it was difficult - not for me it wouldn't. If I had picky eaters like that, they would be doing their own cooking (and clean up afterwards). It just really gets me when a kid is allowed to rule the house/parents!

We have a 3 bite and try it 3 different times rule for our kids. If after trying a food 3 times they still do not like it, I do not ask them to eat it.

My dd is not fond of fish. But when dh prepares Halibut, she will eat it although for several years we called it chicken. She knew it was halibut, but calling it chicken got her through the meal.

My middle son will try almost everything except sea bugs - crab and lobster. He will eat shrimp. He can I love sushi, dh and dd do not care for it.

When I cook dinner I make sure there is something on the plate that everyone likes. I love spaghetti squash, dd is not too fussy about it, so she only gets one spoonful and smothers it in ketchup.

I am the challenging one to feed in my family.

I am Gluten free and avoid most dairy products for medical reasons. When visiting or travelling I am quite militant about what I eat. The results of eating dairy and gluten are not pleasant. If I am a guest, I bring my own food. I do not expect my host to buy gluten free products, Almond Milk or goat cheese.

At home if I am making perogies lasagna or other dairy and gluten rich meals, I just buy sushi to eat.

As a child I learned to tell people I was allergic to eggs. That stopped people from forcing me to eat eggs. I am not allergic, but they cause an immediate migraine which debilitates me for at least one day.

I cook-you eat!! Simple--I can't have fish-if it swims I don't eat it-allergies-that being said I will cook it for my DH as it helps his diet. I will have something else. I have lived overseas and have been served weird-to me- foods. I will try them as to not offend my host but that does not mean I like it.
Foods not on my favourite list includes-cabbage, brussel sprouts, any organ meats, cauliflower, blood sausage, some game meat, tofu.

Growing up at our house, if you thought you didn't like something you has a "No Thank You" helping (about 2 bites). We also had to belong to "The Clean Plate Club" because there were children over seas that were going hungry.

When I was growing up, leaving food on one's plate was a cardinal sin! (I didn't know about the OTHER cardinal sins, then)

ESPECIALLY if one put the food on the plate oneself.
