DGD has been sick with a high fever and rash for a week. They finally sent her to Childrens Hospital in Omaha and she has Kawasaki Disease. I know it can affect her heart but that's all I know. Has anyone heard of this? Anyone have any more info than I have. I'm worried sick.

How worried you must be! I have never heard of this, but lets hope she recovers quickly with no after-effects! Thoughts and prayers are headed your way!

It appears the heart issues are in untreated children. I know little comfort if it is your child/grandchild. It sounds scarey but most issues appear if the child does not receive care and your grand daughter sounds like she is in good care. I hope she'll be better soon.

Yes, my nephew had it 20+ years ago. My sister was worried sick about him, but he is now 25 and played sports and has no problems whatsoever, they made sure they kept checking his heart throughout the years and he's had no problem.

I wouldn't have heart failure just yet. It was very scary for my sister and she wigged out back then. It was attributed to the chemicals in new carpeting being installed during winter months when the house was all closed up, that was one of the theories back then, I don't know if that has changed since then.

I hope she is better soon.

I went to WI for family reunion end if July one cousins wife has dear tick fever not lime. It is a new one fron dear ticks and worse than lime when she went to the hospital fever was 105

It sounds like it is very treatable, it is hard not to be scared and concerned... it is so heartbreaking to watch our little ones go through something like this :(

Kawasaki disease (KD), also known as Kawasaki syndrome, lymph node syndrome and mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome,[1] is an autoimmune disease in which the medium-sized blood vessels throughout the body become inflamed. It is largely seen in children under five years of age. It affects many organ systems, mainly those including the blood vessels, skin, mucous membranes and lymph nodes; however, its rare but most serious effect is on the heart where it can cause fatal coronary artery aneurysms in untreated children. Without treatment, mortality may approach 1%, usually within six weeks of onset. With treatment, the mortality rate is less than 0.01% in the U.S.[2] There is often a pre-existing viral infection that may play a role in its pathogenesis.[3] The conjunctivae and oral mucosa, along with the epidermis (skin), become erythematous (red and inflamed). Edema is often seen in the hands and feet and one or both of the cervical lymph nodes are often enlarged. Also, a remittent fever, often 40°C (104°F) or higher, is characteristic of the acute phase of the disease.[4] In untreated children, the febrile period lasts on average approximately 10 days, but may range from five to 25 days.[4] The disorder was first described in 1967 by Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki in Japan. So, it's treatable, but how scary for your family!! Sorry to hear it...especially in small kids illness is a scary thing!
